PosHYdon, the world’s first project combining offshore wind power, hydrogen production, and natural gas production at sea, has started generating green hydrogen on an operational offshore platform in the North Sea.
The Q13a-A platform, managed by Eni Energy Netherlands, is situated about 13 kilometers from Scheveningen’s coast and is the first fully electrified production platform in the Dutch North Sea.
Seawater is converted into demineralized water and further processed into hydrogen through electrolysis, powered by offshore wind energy. The project’s aim is to gain practical experience in integrating energy systems offshore and producing hydrogen in marine settings. It assesses how effectively an electrolyser operates with variable wind energy output and gathers data on costs, maintenance, and operational performance.
The test phase will produce green hydrogen to establish stable system operations. Subsequent tests will evaluate the system’s response to fluctuations in wind power generation. Key findings will be compiled and analyzed in August and September, with results expected in autumn.
PosHYdon is a collaboration among DEME, EBN, Eneco, Emerson, Gasunie, Hatenboerwater, Investa Expertise Centrum, IV Offshore & Energy, Nel Hydrogen, Eni, Nexstep, NGT, Nogat, TAQA, and TNO, supported by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy.
