In October 2023, Jan De Nul announced ordering Fleeming Jenkin at China’s CMHI Haimen shipyard, alongside a second vessel named William Thomson, both the largest CLVs globally.

On 21 October, Fleeming Jenkin was launched by flooding the dry dock at the CMHI Haimen shipyard.

Operational by late 2026, the CLV will begin work for TenneT, installing export cables on four 2 GW offshore wind grid connections, covering over 2,800 kilometers. Read more about this project here.

Fleeming Jenkin features three cable carousels and a large fiber optic cable hold, able to lay four cables at once. Its capacity of 28,000 tonnes is double that of any other CLV.

The vessel is an ultra-low emission vessel (ULEv) capable of using biofuel and green methanol. A hybrid power plant, combining generators with a 2.5 MWh battery, optimizes fuel use and reduces CO2 emissions.

“The Fleeming Jenkin combines our cable installation expertise, designed by our specialists to operate efficiently, reducing costs and ecological impact,” said Wouter Vermeersch, Director Subsea Cables Offshore Energy at Jan De Nul.

“The Fleeming Jenkin and her twin, William Thomson, are unmatched for installing interconnection cables crucial for a reliable renewable energy network.”

Jan De Nul also ordered a new subsea rock installation vessel (SRIV) named George W. Goethals, its third SRIV, capable of carrying over 30,000 tonnes of material.
