Five of the 76 planned Vestas V236-15.0 MW turbines have been installed at Baltic Power, Poland’s inaugural offshore wind farm, jointly developed by Orlen and Canada’s Northland Power.
The installation of each turbine follows the setup of monopile foundations and transition pieces, with this phase nearing completion as reported by Orlen.
Van Oord’s Svanen is installing monopiles, sourced from Steelwind Nordenham. Transition pieces will be supplied by Belgium’s Smulders.
Subsequent tasks include laying subsea inter-array and export cables and installing offshore substations in autumn. The substations’ steel structures were crafted in shipyards in Gdynia and Gdańsk.
Key components like turbine nacelles, subsea cables, and foundation elements have been produced in facilities in Szczecin, Bydgoszcz, the Tri-City area, Żary, and Niemodlin .
“We began offshore construction work earlier this year, and today we see the results. More turbines are rising in the Baltic Sea, and next year, they will provide clean electricity to Polish households and industry,” stated Ireneusz Fąfara, President of the Management Board of ORLEN.
In May, Baltic Power launched its operations and maintenance (O&M) base in Łeba, supporting the wind farm’s anticipated 30-year operational life. This base currently aids the offshore installation campaign and houses the Marine Coordination Centre.
Meanwhile, construction is progressing in Choczewo on the project’s onshore infrastructure, including a substation to soon connect Baltic Power to the national grid.
The 1.2 GW offshore wind farm is planned to be operational by 2026.
Besides Baltic Power, Orlen is planning additional offshore wind projects with a total capacity of about 5.5 GW. One such project, Baltic East, is being prepared for Poland’s December auction, according to the company.
