Global offshore wind engineering firm Wood Thilsted, alongside COP Frontier, affiliated with Copenhagen Offshore Partners, has launched NeretekTM. This new entity aims to unlock deepwater offshore wind potential at a lower cost.
Industry expert Jonathan Cole now serves as Executive Chair, directing the company’s efforts.
Neretek’s proprietary Neretek BC90TM technology is a next-generation offshore wind foundation. It facilitates cost-effective deepwater deployment, allowing scalable and lower-risk wind energy in the UK’s emerging Other Deepwater Offshore Wind (ODOW) sector.
After a decade of research, Neretek bridges the gap between fixed-bottom and floating wind structures in 60–90m water depths, marking a new era. The Neretek BC90 can access deeper waters and more seabed areas than before.
The company’s launch follows the AR8 announcement on 6 July, where the UK Government outlined plans to expand the offshore wind sector in 60-90m depths. Neretek’s solution addresses this demand.
“From two small turbines off Blyth 25 years ago to an industry providing jobs and clean power, offshore wind is now key to our clean energy goals,” said UK Energy Minister Michael Shanks.
“As we harness Britain’s windy shores, we cut exposure to volatile fossil fuel markets, reducing bills. To fully realize our potential, companies like Neretek must innovate in deeper waters.”
Currently, many of the UK’s strongest wind resources are beyond fixed-bottom reach, becoming uneconomical in deeper waters. Previously, such projects were considered solely for floating offshore wind, with questions about their cost-effectiveness and scalability.
Neretek’s BC90 uses a combination of proven technologies and existing local supply chain capabilities, negating the need for large specialist vessels. It offers a cost-effective method for deepwater deployment with significantly lower CAPEX compared to alternatives.
Developed in the UK, Neretek is well-positioned to meet global demand for offshore wind structures in deeper, challenging environments, both in Europe and Southeast Asia.
“Neretek’s BC90 technology bridges the gap between current fixed designs and not-yet-commercialized floating wind,” said Jonathan Cole, Chair of Neretek.
“This innovation maintains momentum in delivering clean, affordable energy. We’re thrilled to launch the BC90 following one of the most ambitious offshore wind auctions yet, supporting UK leadership in offshore wind.”
