Larsen & Toubro (L&T), based in India, has secured a contract to supply high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations for TenneT’s offshore wind transmission program.

In collaboration with Hitachi Energy, L&T has been selected by TenneT to provide HVDC converter stations.

This initiative aims to boost the integration of large-scale renewable energy into Europe’s power grid, focusing on the German and Dutch regions of the North Sea.

“This collaboration represents a significant advancement for L&T’s Offshore Wind Business. It validates our engineering and project management capabilities and showcases our ability to deliver comprehensive HVDC solutions for large-scale renewable projects. We appreciate TenneT for this opportunity and are eager to contribute to their ambitious North Sea energy transition program through dependable, top-tier execution,” stated Subramanian Sarma, Deputy Managing Director & President of L&T.

The company mentioned that its offshore wind business is supported by strong multidisciplinary capabilities, strategic partnerships with global industry leaders, and a robust supplier ecosystem, anchored by three modular fabrication facilities.

In March 2023, TenneT signed a framework agreement with the consortium of Hitachi Energy and Petrofac for six offshore wind grid connection projects, part of the 14 projects to be realized via the 2 GW program. The projects include Dutch offshore grid connections IJmuiden Ver Alpha, Nederwiek 1, Nederwiek 3, Doordewind 1, Doordewind 2, and the LanWin5 grid connection in Germany.

TenneT recently announced it exercised its right to partially terminate the contract with Petrofac after failing to meet contractual obligations, implementing a solution with Hitachi Energy and a replacement contractor.

Shortly thereafter, the UK engineering and consultancy firm filed for administration.
