Hurricane Ida’s Impact on Ironton and Gulf Climate Change

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, Wilkie Declouet navigated through waist-high waters, fending off snakes, to return to his home in Ironton, a historic Black community located 10 miles from New Orleans. The hurricane had left the area severely flooded, with caskets scattered around for weeks.

Declouet, who had returned first to assess the damage, noted that while his house, elevated on piers, survived, much of the community did not. A casket, containing someone he knew, stood upright amidst the chaos left by the storm.

“Ida was a storm that came up fast,” Declouet remarked. “And it was one of these things where they couldn’t decide whether it was going to be a Category 3, 4 or 5. They couldn’t decide.”

The rapid escalation of Hurricane Ida’s winds was indicative of a larger trend. Recent research shows that the Gulf of Mexico, renamed the Gulf of America by the Trump administration, is one of the fastest-warming bodies of water globally. This warming is contributing to the increasingly severe weather conditions impacting Louisiana and its neighboring states.

Hotter waters in the Gulf are not only intensifying hurricanes but also affecting sea levels, fisheries, and deepwater drilling. The swift rise in water temperatures contributed to Ida’s winds intensifying from 80 to 150 mph just before landfall, reducing preparation time for residents like Declouet.

“This is a dramatic wake-up call,” said Donald Boesch, a marine science professor at the University of Maryland. He highlighted that the rapid warming of the Gulf holds significant implications for hurricane intensification and sea-level rise.

‘Real-world experiences’

Since 1970, the Gulf’s surface temperature has increased nearly 2 degrees Fahrenheit, twice the average rate of the world’s other oceans. This change has already started to impact the region, with the Gulf recording its highest temperature in early July during a recent heatwave.

As the Gulf warms, sea levels rise faster along the Louisiana coast, largely due to land subsidence. Coastal marshes are vanishing more rapidly, and high-tide flooding is becoming a regular occurrence.

Experts assert that a generation of sea-level rise is inevitable, regardless of efforts to reduce fossil fuel emissions. The Gulf’s warming currents influence global climate patterns, complicating the challenge of addressing these changes.

Funding cuts by the Trump administration threaten the monitoring systems crucial for understanding these changes. The Gulf of America Coastal Ocean Observing System (GCOOS), a network providing essential data, faces potential funding reductions, further complicating efforts to track the Gulf’s warming.

The workshop

Before Ida struck, Kevin Martin deployed a buoy in the Gulf to collect data during the hurricane. Despite losing its solar panels, the buoy’s battery power allowed it to record data throughout the storm.

Martin, based at NASA’s Stennis Space Center, uses a range of instruments to monitor the Gulf’s temperature, contributing data to global networks. His work includes autonomous vessels like Eagle Ray and Mola Mola, which map and photograph the Gulf’s seabed.

However, funding constraints limit the deployment of these instruments to hurricane season, leaving gaps in data collection during other times of the year.

Martin has noticed unusual changes, such as increased shark strikes on his gliders, possibly linked to sharks spending more time in the warming Gulf waters.

The deep Gulf

While surface temperatures rise, deeper waters in the Gulf are also warming. Research shows warming even at depths of over 11,000 feet, impacting deep-sea ecosystems crucial to the Gulf’s fisheries.

As hurricanes pass over the Gulf, they draw heat from its surface. Previously, cooler deep waters could slow hurricanes, but with these waters now warmer, storms like Ida intensify more quickly.

Ocean currents

The Gulf is part of a vast system of global ocean currents that regulate the planet’s climate. Changes in these currents could have far-reaching effects, from altering weather patterns to accelerating sea-level rise.

Scientists are concerned that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, a key component of these currents, might slow down or even collapse due to climate change, with significant global impacts.

Rising seas

As the Gulf warms, its rising waters threaten coastal areas. Historical data suggests the Gulf could eventually reclaim areas north of Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas, although adaptation strategies may mitigate these effects.

Extreme sea levels that once occurred once a century are now happening 12 times more often due to human-driven warming.

Communities like Ironton are already experiencing these changes, with residents facing more frequent and severe storms. Audrey Trufant Salvant, a neighbor of Declouet, observed, “They are getting worse. We are ducks in the water. Every time June comes around, we wonder: Will we have to run again?”
