Hydrogen of Dutch Origin (H2DO) and its partners have initiated a feasibility study for a 30–50 MW offshore green hydrogen project connected to wind energy in the Dutch North Sea.
The project will explore creating an offshore hydrogen production facility to convert electricity from wind farms into hydrogen and transport it to shore using pipelines.
In 2025, H2DO gained backing from the Dutch government’s Topsector Energie programme, which finances energy innovation and green industrial development.
In September 2025, H2DO announced the funding, highlighting the study’s role in supporting future offshore hydrogen projects in the North Sea.
The study will cover the design and operation of a 30–50 MW hydrogen production facility in the Hollandse Kust Noord wind area.
H2DO aims to alleviate grid congestion as wind capacity grows, reducing pressure on electricity transmission and limiting the need for large-scale onshore facilities.
The study will develop a FEED entry-ready concept, covering technical design, regulatory requirements, and market integration.
The consortium will evaluate adherence to Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) rules under the EU’s RED III framework and consider circularity and spatial planning.
Another goal is to compare offshore hydrogen production with onshore electrolysis linked through high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems.
The consortium includes H2sea, Haskoning, TCI Risk Management, and ECHT Regie in Transitie, with support from Smulders HSM and other companies.
“With this group of partners, we are laying the groundwork in the Netherlands for projects to move directly into FEED and be scalable across the North Sea,” said Patrice Hijsterborg, managing partner at H2DO.
