In a significant move towards sustainability, Pennsylvania businesses are set to benefit from new projects that promise annual energy savings exceeding $3.1 million. Moreover, these initiatives aim to cut down more than 1.3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in the first year, which is akin to taking 320,614 cars off the road or eliminating emissions from over 154 million gallons of gasoline.
Statewide Impact and Grant Allocation
Grants have been distributed across numerous counties, including Adams, Allegheny, Blair, and others, as part of the Reducing Industrial Sector Emissions in Pennsylvania (RISE PA) program. This initiative is segmented into Medium-scale Award Track (MAT) and Large-scale Award Track (LAT).
Governor Shapiro emphasized the importance of these projects: “As energy costs continue to rise as a result of economic chaos across the country and around the world, my Administration is helping Pennsylvania businesses lower their energy bills, create jobs, and reduce harmful air pollution.” The governor also highlighted the role of these grants in boosting operational efficiency and job creation in the clean energy sector.
RISE PA and Federal Funding
In July 2024, Governor Shapiro’s administration secured $396 million in federal funding, marking the second largest federal grant in Pennsylvania’s history. These funds are designated for RISE PA projects, aiming to assist local companies in reducing emissions and fostering economic growth.
According to DEP Secretary Jessica Shirley, “RISE PA helps manufacturers and industry save money and grow their businesses in the Commonwealth, while doing it in a responsible, innovative, environmentally friendly way that reduces air pollution for communities across Pennsylvania.”
Gautier Steel Holdings and Industry Impacts
The announcement took place at Gautier Steel Holdings in Johnstown, a historic steel manufacturer. With an award of $1,886,529 from the MAT grant, Gautier plans to enhance its furnace systems to improve energy efficiency. This upgrade alone is expected to reduce 7,800 metric tons of carbon emissions in the first year.
Dale Gray, President & CEO of Gautier Steel Holdings, commented, “This project will drive a vital investment in innovative technology that will modernize the reheat furnace that is at the forefront of our 14-inch bar mills production line while significantly reducing the carbon emissions generated by our facility.”
Future Funding and Program Details
The RISE PA grant program, fueled by the EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants, is a $396 million initiative supporting a variety of energy-efficient upgrades. It covers projects that address emissions from fuel burning, equipment leaks, or chemical reactions. The program remains open for future applications, with the next round beginning on May 15, 2026.
