Solar energy projects have entered a new era, expanding beyond the once-ambitious hundreds of megawatts to unprecedented gigawatt scales. This shift is driven by decreasing solar panel costs and enhanced installation techniques. Consequently, power companies are now embarking on projects that were unimaginable just five years ago.

Leading this transformation is China, with the U.S. and other nations following closely, although the U.S. has yet to hit the gigawatt benchmark. These colossal projects necessitate extensive land access, workforce coordination, and strategic transmission planning, paving the way for remote, sunny regions to become major energy suppliers.

Khavda Renewable Energy Park, India: A 30 GW Innovation

The Khavda Renewable Energy Park in Gujarat, India, exemplifies this giga-scale ambition. Spearheaded by Adani, the company has expanded from traditional infrastructure to renewable energy technology, reaching its zenith at Khavda with a 30 gigawatt capacity integrating solar and wind power. The site also boasts one of the world’s largest operating grid batteries.

Set in the challenging environment of the Rann of Kutch, the project required installing fiber-optic cables and a desalination plant to support a workforce of 15,000. Solar panels and 5.2-megawatt wind turbines, crafted by Adani, are meticulously arranged to optimize wind access.

Commencing in 2023, the first 551 megawatts were operational by February 2024, and capacity has now reached 13 gigawatts. Innovative cleaning robots maintain panel efficiency by dusting them off twice daily without water.

To address power surplus during daylight, Adani built a 1.1-gigawatt/3.5-gigawatt-hour battery storage facility, recently commissioned, claiming the title of the largest single-site grid battery, surpassing California’s Edwards & Sanborn battery. This storage allows for profitable energy sales post-sunset, with plans to add another 10 gigawatt-hours by next April.

“Mr. Adani just bit the bullet and went for it,” stated Arun Sharma, Adani Group’s chief sustainability officer, during Boston Climate Week, emphasizing their commitment to gigawatt-scale projects.
