GEM unveils electric utility truck for neighborhood and work site use

GEM unveils the electric GEM eX, a versatile utility truck designed for neighborhood gear hauling and off-road work.
an electric, street legal, all terrain work UTV

California-based GEM, known for its innovative approach to low-speed vehicles, has introduced a new electric utility truck designed to transition smoothly from navigating neighborhoods to tackling more rugged terrains.

Over the last 25 years, General Electric Motorcars (GEM) has been a key player in crafting low-speed neighborhood vehicles. Throughout its history, the company has undergone several ownership changes, having been under the purview of Daimler Chrysler and Polaris, before finding its current home with Waev Inc.

The latest addition to their lineup is the GEM eX, a successor to the nearly two-decade-old eL XD model, marking the company’s second foray into electric utility vehicles.

The GEM eX has 9.5 inches of ground clearance, and can be optioned with all-terrain tires

According to Waev CEO Keith Simon, “UTVs are everywhere, but most are either cart-based or designed for recreation. Until now, there has not been a purpose-built, street-legal vehicle that is all-terrain capable, commercial-grade and affordable. The GEM eX changes that, delivering reliable electric power and all-weather comfort in a work-ready platform.”

The GEM eX, like its predecessor, reaches a top speed of 25 mph (40 km/h), making it ideal for short trips to work sites, university campuses, and other community facilities. The vehicle can be equipped with all-terrain tires and features a 9.5-inch (24-cm) ground clearance, allowing it to traverse challenging landscapes. Its trailing arm rear suspension offers 6.5 inches of travel, and it boasts a 50-degree approach angle.

The GEM eX is rear-wheel drive, offering what the company describes as “confident traction where it matters most.” It features a limited slip differential that engages as needed, and its single-pedal driving system aids in control during downhill navigation. A hill hold feature maintains stability on inclines.

Safety is prioritized with features such as a reversing camera, pedestrian noise emitter, non-slip flooring, grab handles, roof crush protection, and bright orange three-point safety belts. The vehicle is powered by a 6.5-kW (48-V) motor, with a standard battery range of up to 85 miles (122 km) per charge. An optional 16-kWh battery extends the range to 125 miles and includes fast-charging capabilities.

Measuring 118 inches (300 cm) in length, 55.5 inches (141 cm) in width, and 73 inches (185 cm) in height, the GEM eX sits on a wheelbase of 86 inches, with 13-inch wheels as standard. Its stopping power comes from hydraulic disc brakes on each wheel. The rear composite bed measures 40 x 49 x 12 inches (102 x 124 x 30 cm) and can handle up to 1,250 lb (567 kg) of cargo, equipped with L-track side rails and gas-assisted lift options.

Waev’s Director of Engineering, Sven Etzelsberge, said, “We’ve field-tested the GEM eX in every condition imaginable – from the deserts of Arizona to the winters of Minnesota – logging tens of thousands of miles. We partnered with some of the most demanding customers, including US military bases, major cities, leading colleges, and even global auto manufacturers. Every piece of feedback was built back into the vehicle, and the result is a work UTV that’s refined, reliable and ready to go to work across the world.”

The GEM eX is available for order now, with shipping anticipated to begin later this year. Pricing details are available upon request.
