Norway’s energy company Equinor has awarded Proserv a contract to deploy cable monitoring technology at the 402 MW Dudgeon offshore wind farm in the UK.
Proserv’s ECG Business Unit will implement its advanced monitoring technology to offer continuous insight into cable and termination health at the project, located 32 kilometers off the north Norfolk coast. Deployment is set for 2027.
The agreement includes deploying Proserv’s Distributed Electrical Sensing (DES) technology, which uses existing fiber infrastructure and passive sensing to provide detailed current and voltage measurements, enhancing visibility of electrical performance in remote areas, according to the company.
The system aims to identify developing cable and electrical faults earlier, improve asset health visibility, ensure long-term infrastructure reliability, reduce the risk of outages and lost generation, and enable more targeted maintenance.
“ECG provides Equinor with better visibility of electrical assets, allowing early issue detection before they escalate. By integrating ECG with DES, we offer a comprehensive view of network performance, boosting operator confidence in site generation availability and security,” said Barry Frost, Director of ECG at Proserv.
“This approach shifts from reactive maintenance to proactive asset management, minimizing risk, enhancing reliability, and maximizing the value of offshore wind assets over their lifespan.”
Since completion in late 2017, the Dudgeon offshore wind farm has been powering over 430,000 UK homes with its 67 turbines, each rated at 6 MW.
Owned by Dudgeon Offshore Wind Limited, a joint venture of Equinor (operator), Masdar, and China Resources, the wind farm remains a significant energy provider.
