Pennsylvania Gains Momentum in Clean Energy with Major Investment

Pennsylvania is making waves in the clean energy sector with a significant investment that is set to transform the state’s economic landscape. Governor Josh Shapiro has announced a substantial $352.9 million investment by Eos Energy Enterprises (Eos), a leading manufacturer of zinc-based battery storage systems, to move its headquarters from New Jersey to Pittsburgh and expand its manufacturing operations in Allegheny County.

This move is set to create and retain a total of 1,000 jobs, with 735 new positions. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is backing this project with $22 million through grants and capital funding, solidifying the state’s role as a hub for clean energy manufacturing and innovation.

Under Governor Shapiro’s administration, Pennsylvania is the only state in the Northeast with a growing economy, attracting nearly $26 billion in private-sector investments and generating over 13,200 new jobs since he assumed office. The new Eos headquarters is expected to open in 2026 at Nova Place on the North Shore of Pittsburgh, with an expanded manufacturing facility in Marshall Township that will focus on large-scale battery production.

Further enhancing Pennsylvania’s energy profile, Eos has partnered with Talen Energy Corporation to develop energy storage projects across the state. This collaboration aims to meet rising electricity demands and support infrastructure for AI and cloud computing through the deployment of Eos’ Z3 zinc-based batteries and Talen’s existing generation assets.

Stakeholder Perspectives

Joe Mastrangelo, CEO of Eos Energy, remarked, “Pennsylvania is positioning itself at the forefront of America’s energy transition — enabling us to bring America’s battery to scale.” This sentiment echoes the state’s commitment to advancing energy solutions and job creation.

DCED Secretary Rick Siger emphasized the importance of this expansion, stating, “With this expansion, Eos is strengthening two of the key industries at the center of our Economic Development Strategy — energy and manufacturing.”

Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato highlighted the collaborative efforts that made this expansion possible, noting, “Eos Energy’s expansion in Allegheny County is a testament to our region’s collaborative spirit and commitment to shared prosperity.”
