Key milestones have been reached at Taiwan’s 495 MW Fengmiao 1 offshore wind farm, with Jan De Nul and CDWE completing significant construction phases.
On 5 August, Jan De Nul’s cable-laying vessel Willem de Vlamingh completed the connection of high-voltage export cables to the offshore substation. This completed the grid connection process, following installation, burial, and protection of cables.
Earlier in the year, the company had installed the 45-kilometre and 44-kilometre cables, wet storing them until the substation was ready.
Also on 5 August, CDWE, a joint venture between DEME and Taiwan’s CSBC, completed transport and installation of the project’s 99 pin piles, offshore substation foundation, and topside. The installation was done ahead of schedule using the vessel Green Jade.
The consortium of Semco Maritime and PTSC M&C secured the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for the 500 MW offshore substation in 2023.
According to DEME, the offshore substation’s foundation and topside weigh over 8,000 tonnes, marking it as the largest in Taiwan so far.
With the substation in place, CDWE will continue installing 33 jacket foundations for Vestas V236-15.0 MW turbines. Century Wind Power is manufacturing these foundations in Taiwan.
Van Oord will handle transport, installation, and burial of 33 inter-array cables.
Fengmiao 1, developed by Copenhagen Offshore Partners for Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, is situated approximately 35 kilometres off Taichung’s coast. The project, Taiwan’s first Round 3 offshore wind project, reached financial close in 2025 and is set to begin commercial operation in 2027.
