Collaboration of French Firms on Superconducting Cable Initiative for Remote Offshore Wind Farms

Air Liquide, CentraleSupélec, and partners launch SupraMarine to connect offshore wind farms to shore via HTS cables.

Air Liquide, CentraleSupélec, ITP Interpipe, Nexans, and RTE collaborate on connecting offshore wind farms to shore using a High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) superconducting transmission system.

The SupraMarine project will explore electrical connections between offshore wind farms and the shore using High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) cables. These cables, maintained at low temperatures with liquid nitrogen, promise minimal energy loss during electricity transmission.

Nexans states that the demonstrator represents a significant advancement in energy transmission from offshore wind farms, simplifying part of the electrical grid connection. The SupraMarine project offers an innovative solution to address offshore wind energy supply challenges, with most materials sourced from Europe.

Air Liquide will provide cryogenic plants using its Turbo-Brayton technology to maintain the superconducting state of the cables. The firm will also focus on the system’s thermal performance and manage cryogenic operations.

CentraleSupélec, through the GeePs laboratory at Université Paris-Saclay, Sorbonne Université, will offer expertise from experimental platforms to doctoral research training to tackle scientific challenges.

ITP Interpipe will design a high-insulation rigid pipe-in-pipe cryostat envelope, while Nexans will develop the HVAC superconducting cables, junctions, and terminations.

RTE will contribute as a grid operator, ensuring research compatibility with real-world grid requirements.

The project, having received a EUR 7.3 million grant from the French State via ADEME, aims to commence testing in 2028.

In related news, Nexans recently completed the final export cable campaign at the 496 MW Dieppe Le Tréport offshore wind farm in France.
