California’s rapid transformation in energy storage is setting new benchmarks in the clean energy sector. Since Governor Newsom assumed office in 2019, the state has witnessed a meteoric rise in battery storage capacity, from under 700 MW to an impressive 21,112 MW. This growth is attributed to strategic investments and policies that have positioned California as a leader in the global energy transition.

CEC Chair David Hochschild emphasized California’s commitment to innovation, stating, “California has always prioritized innovation, investing in the science and technology of the future and advancing the goalpost on what is possible.” This reflects the state’s ambition for a 100% clean energy future.

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has been instrumental in this transition by mandating the procurement of extensive energy storage solutions. CPUC President John Reynolds remarked, “California’s battery storage success is the result of thoughtful planning and sustained investment,” highlighting the essential role of battery storage in enhancing grid reliability and integrating more clean energy.

Solar and Batteries: Powering the Future

California’s dedication to achieving carbon neutrality by 2045 is evident in its solar and battery initiatives. The cost of solar panels has plummeted, from about $5 per watt 25 years ago to just 15 cents per watt today. Similarly, lithium-ion battery costs have significantly decreased, over 90% in the last decade.

    For the first time, solar energy has become the largest electricity source in California, surpassing natural gas in the first half of 2026. This shift is attributed to increased solar production and moderate electricity demand, reducing air pollution and dependence on natural gas.

    Comparing the first half of 2024 to the same period in 2026, solar energy usage increased by 22%, while natural gas usage fell by 51%. Grid battery storage capacity also surged by 80%, supporting solar energy even after sunset. California’s solar capacity reached a record 23,000 MW in June 2026.

  • Leading in Energy Storage Capacity

    California boasts the largest battery storage capacity in the nation. Its 4-hour-duration systems can deliver power twice as long as those in Texas. The state continues to expand its capacity, recently celebrating its first 8-hour battery project, the Tumbleweed Energy Storage facility in Kern County (source).

This progress underscores the state’s comprehensive approach to fostering an economy that generates jobs, reduces costs, and advances California’s standing in the global clean energy landscape.

California’s Role in Clean Energy

Since 2019, California has introduced over 37,000 megawatts of utility-scale clean energy, enhancing grid reliability and advancing the clean energy transition (source). Batteries are pivotal in California’s target of achieving 100% clean electricity by 2045. By the end of 2024, 67% of retail electricity sales were from clean energy, with clean energy meeting all electricity needs on 279 days last year. In the first half of 2026, this occurred on more than 90% of days.

Safety remains paramount in California’s clean energy expansion. In 2024, Governor Newsom initiated the State Battery Storage Safety Collaborative, leading to updated safety standards and oversight. The CPUC ensures compliance with safety and maintenance standards (source).

California’s clean energy sector also bolsters the economy. With 552,300 jobs, the state leads the nation in clean energy employment, nearly double that of Texas.
