BYD Prepares to Unveil a More Advanced Seagull EV in China
BYD is set to introduce an updated version of its budget-friendly Seagull electric vehicle in China next week. Known for its affordability, the Seagull, priced at approximately $10,000, is one of BYD’s most popular offerings in its home market.
Global Presence and Popularity
Internationally, the Seagull is marketed under different names. In Europe and the UK, it is sold as the Dolphin Surf, while in other regions it is known as the Dolphin Mini. Despite varying branding, this model remains one of the top-selling electric vehicles globally. According to Cleantechnica, it was the sixth most popular EV worldwide in the first eight months of 2026.
Innovations in the New Seagull
To stay competitive, BYD plans to launch a bigger and smarter version of the Seagull, offering a more premium experience. The second-generation model will officially debut on October 20 at the Zhengzhou International Circuit, as confirmed by IT Home News.
The updated Seagull will feature a longer body and wheelbase, measuring 4,205 mm in length with a 2,650 mm wheelbase. It will also accommodate five passengers, adding an extra seat compared to its predecessor. The new model will sport a more powerful 95 kW (127 hp) electric motor and transition from front-wheel to rear-wheel drive.
Enhanced Features and Technology
Ride quality and handling are expected to improve thanks to an upgraded multi-link independent rear suspension. Furthermore, the vehicle will come equipped with two BYD lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade Batteries, supporting ranges up to 320 km and 420 km. Higher trims will benefit from BYD’s 1,500 kW Flash Charging technology, allowing rapid charging from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes.
Interior and Safety Upgrades
Inside, the Seagull will see major upgrades like a larger infotainment screen, a revamped steering wheel, and an updated center console. New safety and convenience features will be included across all models, such as BYD’s high-speed tire blowout stability system. Premium versions will also offer the God’s Eye B intelligent driving system and DiPilot 300 driver assistance with LiDAR.
Market Release and Pricing
Pre-orders for the new Seagull began on October 9, although pricing is yet to be revealed. Rumors suggest the second-generation Seagull might be priced at approximately 85,000 yuan, or about $12,500. After its launch in China, BYD plans to introduce the upgraded model to international markets, possibly continuing under the Dolphin Surf and Mini names.
