The Danish Maritime Authority has detained the wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) Brave Tern after a collision in the Port of Esbjerg damaged turbine components for the Thor offshore wind farm.
Danish newspaper JydskeVestkysten reported that the incident occurred during a harbour manoeuvre when the Fred. Olsen Windcarrier WTIV drifted into the WTIV Wind Keeper, owned by Cadeler, due to wind conditions.
The authority has detained Brave Tern for inspections to assess the extent of any damage.
RWE, owner and developer of the Thor offshore wind farm, confirmed that components aboard Brave Tern struck another vessel and the dockside at the Port of Esbjerg.
There were no injuries reported, but one person was transported to the hospital for a medical check-up.
“The cause of the incident and the extent of any damage to the vessel and cargo are currently under investigation,” RWE stated.
JydskeVestkysten noted the vessel was carrying nine blades at the collision time.
Local media reports mentioned that South and South Jutland Police attended the scene and attributed the incident to wind and weather conditions.
The impact on the construction schedule for the Thor offshore wind farm remains undisclosed.
Fred. Olsen Windcarrier’s Brave Tern installed the first wind turbine at the Thor project site, about 22 kilometers off Jutland’s west coast, in March this year, and the wind farm generated its first power shortly afterward.
The 1.1 GW Thor offshore wind farm will feature 72 Siemens Gamesa SG 14-236 DD wind turbines rated at 15 MW, with installation planned for this year, and full commissioning scheduled for 2027.
Regarding Cadeler’s Wind Keeper, acquired in 2025 and upgraded to install 15 MW turbines, the WTIV was previously reported to have been deployed on its first project at the 960 MW He Dreiht offshore wind farm in Germany.
