Spotted in New Jersey, a camouflaged prototype of BMW’s upcoming X5 G65 has sparked curiosity among automobile enthusiasts. This sighting near the automaker’s North American headquarters suggests this could be the fully electric BMW iX5, coinciding with a period of intensified testing for BMW vehicles worldwide. Recently, spy photographers have documented a variety of BMW test cars, including an electric M3 at the Nürburgring and the heavily cloaked iX5 circulating around BMW’s U.S. base.
A Distinctive Design Approach for the iX5
The prototype showcases BMW’s evolving design aesthetic, even under layers of camouflage. The front of the vehicle echoes the Neue Klasse design language, reminiscent of what’s been seen on the upcoming iX3. The shift towards a cleaner and more structured appearance is evident, aligning with BMW’s design evolution.
Specifically tailored for SUVs, the vertical kidney grille stands out, differing from the horizontal grille treatment reserved for models like the upcoming i3 sedan. Larger models such as the X5, X7, and 7 Series will continue to sport these prominent designs, albeit with refined details compared to current iterations.
Innovative Features and Functional Changes
Upon closer inspection, the side profile of the G65 X5 reveals the absence of traditional door handles, replaced by sleek winglets integrated into the beltline. This feature, already seen in BMW’s Skytop and Speedtop concepts, suggests the use of electrically operated doors—enhancing aerodynamics and design flow, a hallmark of the Neue Klasse philosophy.
Rear Design Evolution and Production Insights
Moving to the rear, the vehicle displays new taillight designs with expansive clusters that nearly converge at the tailgate’s center, accompanied by a subtly updated BMW roundel akin to the new iX3. The camouflage also hints at a sporty roof spoiler with vertical fins, while a black strip suggests the departure of the split-opening rear hatch.
Diverse Drivetrain Options
Set to enter production in October 2026, the G65 X5 will offer an unprecedented variety of five drivetrain options, making it one of BMW’s most versatile models. Among these is a hydrogen variant, developed in collaboration with Toyota, projected to be available by 2028 under the potential name iX5 60H xDrive.
BMW M’s Influence and Performance Variants
The G65 X5 lineup will prominently feature BMW M models. The X5 M is anticipated to retain a V8 engine outside the EU, with a fully electric variant also in development. Additionally, the M Performance range is expected to include:
- X5 M60e (plug-in hybrid)
- X5 M60 (gasoline V8)
- iX5 M70 xDrive (fully electric)
Initial Model Rollout
The G65 X5 will first be released with mainstream versions, including the 40 xDrive and 40d xDrive models, with a plug-in hybrid to follow soon after production begins.
