The landscape of clean energy manufacturing is set to transform with the opening of a newly expanded facility by American Lithium Energy (ALE) in Vista, California. This significant development marks a leap forward in the production of advanced lithium-ion batteries, crucial for aerospace and defense sectors.
California’s Role in Clean Energy Innovation
VISTA — The California Energy Commission (CEC) celebrated the launch of ALE’s expanded mega factory, which has become one of the largest lithium-ion battery manufacturing sites in the United States. This expansion, partly funded by CEC grants, underscores California’s pioneering efforts in clean energy technology and production.
With its facility size increasing from 23,000 to 82,000 square feet, ALE aims to boost domestic lithium-ion battery production, supporting future technological and economic advancements. “This state-of-the-art facility will further cement California as the leader in developing zero-emission transportation solutions,” stated CEC Commissioner Noemí Gallardo.
Innovative Battery Solutions
Dr. Jiang Fan, founder and president of ALE, emphasized the importance of their pioneering battery technologies, noting, “ALE’s cutting-edge battery solutions are powering critical land, air, sea, and space innovations. We can meet that growing demand while bringing valuable manufacturing and engineering jobs to California.”

The new facility was developed with over $13 million in grants from the CEC’s Clean Transportation Program and Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC). These funds are aimed at expanding electric vehicle battery cell production and piloting high-capacity silicon-anode prismatic batteries.
Enhancing Production Capabilities
The 18650 cell, known for its high density and safety, can function in extreme conditions and is currently utilized in satellites, hybrid aircraft, UAVs, and other critical applications. This expansion allows ALE to significantly increase its production of these cells and fully automate the manufacturing process.
The EPIC-funded pilot line is crucial in validating the new silicon-anode technology, which offers 30% greater capacity and improved safety. This same technology is being scaled up on the CTP-funded mega line to provide more cost-effective and reliable energy solutions.
Industry and Economic Impact
William Hadala, chief strategy officer for ALE, emphasized the importance of partnerships in fostering innovation, stating, “Private-public partnerships are essential to continue California’s leadership in innovation and growth in manufacturing.”
Currently, ALE employs between 150 and 200 people in San Diego County, a significant hub for defense and aerospace industries. The opening ceremony attracted over 100 attendees, including government officials and industry leaders.
