Subaru’s New Electric Trailseeker SUV: A Blend of Familiarity and Innovation

Subaru has unveiled its latest all-electric offering, the 2026 Trailseeker SUV, at the New York International Auto Show. This new model builds on Subaru’s electric vehicle lineup, following the Solterra, and showcases a collaboration with Toyota in its design and engineering.

The Trailseeker is Subaru’s second fully electric vehicle and draws visual inspiration from various models in the brand’s lineup. It bears resemblance to the Subaru Ascent but in a compact form, and some may notice hints of the Outback in its design. This SUV aims to cater to outdoor enthusiasts, offering an alternative to the Solterra.

As a larger sibling to the Solterra, the Trailseeker is set to rival other forthcoming electric SUVs such as the Rivian R2, which will start production in 2026. Unlike the Rivian R2, which will be manufactured in the U.S., Subaru’s Trailseeker will be assembled in Japan, which could pose challenges due to tariffs.

Both the Trailseeker and its predecessor, the Solterra, share some engineering characteristics, including a new propulsion system. Specifics on this system and the platform underpinning the Trailseeker have not yet been disclosed. More information, including pricing, is expected before the vehicle becomes available in 2026.

Subaru has equipped the Trailseeker with signature features, such as an all-wheel-drive system powered by two electric motors. These motors generate a combined 375 horsepower and enable the SUV to tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Subaru’s engineers have optimized the Trailseeker’s suspension and all-wheel-drive capabilities to handle a variety of terrains. The SUV offers a generous cargo area and a taller roof to accommodate outdoor gear. While its off-road capability is noteworthy, the Trailseeker’s 8.3 inches of ground clearance is less than that of the Forester and Outback models.

Powering this electric vehicle is a 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, which Subaru claims offers a range of over 260 miles. The Trailseeker features a North American Charging Standard port, enabling access to Tesla’s Supercharging Network.

Subaru has made aesthetic updates to differentiate the Trailseeker from other models, including redesigned headlamps, a distinct front bumper, and options for 20- and 18-inch wheels. Inside, the Trailseeker boasts metallic finishes on the dash, a center console designed for personal devices, and a 14-inch touchscreen, the largest offered by Subaru (apart from the new Solterra).

The Trailseeker’s infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and it features two wireless smartphone chargers along with USB-C fast chargers for the rear seats. Advanced driver assistance systems are integrated, offering features like blind spot monitoring, lane departure alerts, and adaptive cruise control.
