BMW i3 Touring Spotted Testing at Nürburgring: An Electric Wagon

SUV fatigue? BMW offers an alternative with the i3 Touring, an electric wagon spotted testing at Nürburgring.
First BMW 3 Series Electric Wagon Spotted During Track Test

In a world where SUVs seem to dominate the landscape, BMW is offering a fresh alternative for those yearning for something different. The latest i3 Touring, an electric wagon, has been spotted undergoing rigorous testing at the Nürburgring, hinting at exciting additions to the Neue Klasse lineup.

The captured footage reveals a partially camouflaged i3 Touring prototype navigating the challenging Nürburgring track. While the front remains somewhat disguised, significant changes are anticipated beyond the B-pillars. Here, BMW’s design team has crafted an extended roof culminating in a practical tailgate.

Notably, the panoramic glass roof stands out, catching the eye with its expansive view. As standard on the i3 sedan, it’s expected to be a staple on the wagon too. Unlike the previous 3 Series Touring, this glass top is a single-piece design, lacking a sliding section.

BMW’s Signature Touring Feature Might Be Gone

At the rear, the prototype appears devoid of the button that allows for separate opening of the rear glass from the tailgate. This feature, long associated with BMW’s Touring models, has already been omitted from the 5 Series/i5 Touring and seems to be absent in the new i3 Touring as well. When queried about its removal, BMW attributed the decision to aerodynamic improvements, as detailed here.

Inside, the i3 Touring is likely to mirror the i3 sedan’s interior, showcasing a large central display, a digital windshield projection, and minimal physical controls. The traditional iDrive rotary dial has been moved, with BMW confirming its absence between the seats in the Touring model.

The i3 Touring promises increased practicality, boasting a larger cargo area compared to the sedan’s 420-liter trunk. Additionally, the 31-liter front storage compartment is expected to remain unchanged, making it a viable alternative to the upcoming iX3.

BMW Is Saving The Wagons

As the automotive industry leans heavily towards crossovers, BMW is doubling down on its electric wagons. Following the i5 Touring, the i3 Touring offers a lower center of gravity and ample trunk space, attributes long cherished by BMW enthusiasts. The Touring badge’s legacy remains intact as electrification progresses, ensuring these body styles continue to appeal to a broad audience.

Anticipated to debut in 2027, the i3 Touring will coincide with a facelift for the i5 Touring, aligning both with BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture. Whether a new 3 Series wagon with combustion engines will join remains to be seen, particularly in the U.S., where the M5 Touring is currently the sole option.

M Versions In The Works

Looking ahead, BMW M is poised to enhance the lineup with a high-performance iteration. The i3 M60, inspired by its sedan counterpart, is expected to be the first, followed by a potential full-electric M3 Touring featuring a quad-motor setup. Despite the visual similarities, the i3 Touring and its 3 Series counterpart will differ fundamentally in their underlying architecture, with the former utilizing the Neue Klasse electric platform and the latter continuing on the CLAR platform. Production sites will also differ, with the i3 Touring set to be manufactured in Munich and the 3 Series in Dingolfing.
