Chinese Companies Lead Global EV Battery Market with Dominant Share
The global electric vehicle (EV) battery market is seeing notable shifts, with Chinese companies solidifying their dominance. In the first eight months of 2026, seven Chinese firms together controlled over 73% of the global market, highlighting China’s growing influence in the EV battery sector.

CATL (HKEX: 3750) and BYD (HKEX: 1211) continue to lead the pack, with a combined market share of 54.6% from January to August 2026. CATL alone accounted for 39.4% of the market, installing 333.0 GWh, marking a 25.2% year-on-year increase.
Data from SNE Research reveals that the global EV battery usage reached 844.2 GWh during this period, a 19.7% increase compared to the same timeframe last year. August alone saw battery installations total 116.8 GWh, growing by 14.3% year-on-year.
Despite the overall growth, Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) supplier LGES faced challenges, with a modest 0.9% increase in installations to 68.3 GWh, while its market share declined to 8.1%.
Other notable performers include CALB (HKEX: 3931) and Gotion High-tech (SZSE: 002074), which saw significant year-on-year growth in installations, boosting their market shares to 5.3% and 4.9%, respectively.
Meanwhile, Rept Battero Energy (HKEX: 666) recorded the most substantial surge in installations, with a 126.3% increase to 20.3 GWh, holding steady in the top 10.
Regionally, Europe led in growth, with a 29.2% increase in battery installations, while China’s growth rate was 16.9%. In contrast, North America faced a 23.7% decline, attributed to a lag in EV demand, prompting some manufacturers to pivot towards energy storage systems.
