Governor Lamont Announces Connecticut and Other New England States To Host Regional Nuclear Summit

Exploring the Future of Nuclear Energy in New England

On the horizon for September 30, 2026, is a pivotal summit poised to redefine the energy landscape of New England. This regional policy summit will dive into the prospects of advanced nuclear technologies, aiming to bolster long-term energy solutions across the northeastern states. The summit is a collaborative effort involving Connecticut and its New England neighbors: Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

The event, titled the 2026 New England Regional Nuclear Policy Summit, will take place at the University of Massachusetts Lowell Rist Institute for Sustainability and Energy. While the gathering will have limited in-person attendance, interested parties can also participate virtually. For registration, click here.

The summit aims to explore how advanced nuclear technologies can contribute to affordable energy, grid stability, economic growth, and zero-carbon solutions. It will also address essential factors such as safety, regulatory protocols, and community involvement. As Governor Ned Lamont states, “Connecticut has been a leader in nuclear energy as part of our state’s all-of-the-above approach to delivering affordable, reliable, and clean energy for Connecticut ratepayers.”

This initiative follows a joint directive from the New England governors, as outlined in a joint statement, to ensure the safe and reliable operation of current nuclear plants while exploring new nuclear and fusion technologies. This directive also tasked state energy offices with organizing regional meetings to garner public and stakeholder input.

Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) will take part in the discussions, continuing its commitment to public engagement. “DEEP is committed to continuing this open dialogue with Connecticut communities and our New England sister states to explore the potential role of advanced nuclear technologies,” said DEEP Acting Commissioner Emma Cimino.

Connecticut’s nuclear expertise is anchored by the Millstone Nuclear Power Station and partnerships with New Hampshire’s Seabrook Station, supplying a significant portion of New England’s energy needs. The state has pioneered contracts ensuring these plants continue contributing affordable energy.

In 2025, Connecticut solidified its nuclear leadership through Public Act 25-173, which creates pathways for local involvement in nuclear development and supports early planning for new nuclear projects. DEEP has been proactive, launching public workshops to educate and gather community input.

Workforce development is another focus, with Public Act 26-46 directing further studies to ensure a skilled workforce for future nuclear projects. The strategic alignment of state policies highlights the region’s readiness to embrace next-generation nuclear solutions.

As electricity demand surges, the summit represents a significant step forward in exploring advanced nuclear technologies, with Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey emphasizing the need for affordable, reliable power. Governor Dan McKee of Rhode Island also stresses the importance of expanding energy resources, including nuclear options.

The summit is a testament to New England’s commitment to collaborative energy solutions, supported by the National Governors Association, as the region seeks innovative investment models for deploying advanced nuclear technologies.
