An Unconventional Path: From Medicine to Environmental Entrepreneurship
In a world where traditional career paths often hold sway, Shilshila Acharya’s journey is a testament to following one’s passion against societal expectations. Once on the road to becoming a doctor, she pivoted her ambitions to environmental science, a decision that has since led to a thriving enterprise focused on sustainability.
Despite receiving a full scholarship for MBBS, Shilshila was not satisfied with the prospect of a medical career. Her true passion lay in environmental science, a subject that had captivated her since childhood. This passion prompted her to forgo the prestigious scholarship and enroll at Kathmandu University to study what she truly loved. This decision was initially met with resistance from her family, especially her father, who questioned the practicality of her choice. Nevertheless, Shilshila was resolute.
“Support my expenses for these four years, after that I won’t ask for money,” she told her father. Her mother, more understanding of her aspirations, encouraged her to follow her heart. Eventually, her father came around to support her decision.
Through her academic journey, Shilshila excelled, topping her classes and earning accolades, including a medal from the President of Nepal. Her commitment to environmental science led her to pursue a master’s degree with a joint scholarship from Tribhuvan University and the Norwegian government, studying in both Nepal and Norway.
Upon completing her studies in 2011, Shilshila immersed herself in environmental campaigns, including efforts to plant trees along the newly expanded roads in Nepal. Her involvement in such initiatives sparked the inception of the ‘Bhaktapur Green Highway Movement,’ which aimed to enhance urban greenery.
Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to found ‘Hamri Bahini,’ a social enterprise under the Himalayan Climate Initiative, which focused on producing cotton bags to replace plastic ones, thereby providing employment to many women. This initiative was a stepping stone to her current venture, ‘Avni Ventures,’ established in 2019. The company specializes in waste management, a sector where Shilshila has been a pioneering force in Nepal.
Avni Ventures has made significant strides in waste management by segregating non-recyclable materials and using them as an alternative energy source for industries. The company employs numerous individuals and provides technical support to government bodies for policy formulation.
In addition to her business pursuits, Shilshila founded the non-profit ‘Avni Center for Sustainability,’ which focuses on empowering youth through sustainable projects and preserving indigenous knowledge. Her holistic approach to environmental work connects it to employment, women’s empowerment, and entrepreneurship.
Shilshila’s personal life is equally balanced. She reconnected with her boyfriend from her school days, who returned from the US to marry her. Together, they have a daughter, and her husband, Sushil Khadka, is actively engaged in politics.
Shilshila’s unwavering dedication to her chosen path has not gone unnoticed. She was recognized in the BBC’s list of ‘100 Women of the World’ in 2024, highlighting her impact and influence beyond Nepal. Her journey, marked by courage and conviction, continues to inspire many who dare to follow their dreams.
