Revolutionizing Micromobility: Envo’s Modular-EV Platform
Imagine transforming a single vehicle into a golf cart, an ATV, or even a last-mile delivery truck. This vision is becoming reality with Envo’s innovative approach to electric vehicles. The Canadian micromobility company introduces the Utility Personal Transporter (UPT), a modular electric platform capable of morphing into nearly 20 different vehicle types, all from a single base.
Envo has expanded this concept into a new brand, Modular-EV, featuring a dedicated storefront and an online configurator. This platform is designed not to replace your car but to consolidate the various single-purpose vehicles currently taking up space in your garage or fleet depot. Much like how smartphones have replaced multiple gadgets, the UPT aims to be the only utility vehicle you need.
The UPT is not your typical electric car but an electric cart with a speed limit far below highway regulations. Envo offers it as an alternative to various single-use machines with its reconfigurable design, which is built on an aluminum T-slot Base Block chassis. This allows for resizing and attachment of different modules without the need for welding.
Powered by hub motors at each wheel, the UPT features quad-motor torque control, offering precise handling and the ability to perform zero-radius turns. Customers can choose between different wheelbases, drive types, and battery configurations, with ranges varying from 62 to 125 miles. The platform’s modular design extends to swappable, user-serviceable batteries, enhancing its repairability.
Customization options are broad, with choices for tires, steering mechanisms, seating, and body parts. The entire system can be dismantled and reassembled using basic tools, making it easy to transport in a truck bed.
The Modular-EV is available as a bare chassis or a variety of preset models including the UP20 base, the UT20 utility vehicle, and the AT20 series for all-terrain use. Envo also targets commercial clients with its ET-series, designed for industries like airports and hospitals. A partnership with Faction aims to integrate self-driving capabilities into these vehicles.
The UPT starts at about $9,000 for the basic framework, with completed builds ranging from $10,000 to $12,000. Although it can’t replace a highway-capable car, the UPT offers a versatile platform for a variety of tasks, from mowing lawns to hauling cargo.
