Ford’s Innovative Approach to EV Truck Launches

In a unique marketing strategy, Ford has been testing its new electric truck under a cloak of camouflage, sparking curiosity among onlookers. The camo isn’t just for disguise; it includes QR codes that direct people to Ford’s product announcement site.

Ford’s latest electric vehicle endeavor signals a bold move as the company takes a significant step into the EV market. The truck, which is set to be priced at $30,000, has been spotted during public testing with a camouflaged exterior. This strategic cover features playful patterns and QR codes, which have become a talking point among automotive enthusiasts.

Scanning these QR codes leads curious observers to a Ford webpage that cheekily congratulates them for “spotting a unicorn” and provides exclusive updates on the vehicle’s progress. Alan Clarke, Ford’s vice president of advanced development projects, explains in a video message, “Chances are, you saw something on the road that piqued your interest, and you’re here because you’re curious. This website will be your exclusive insight into our progress.”

An EV Recharge

The camouflaged truck represents Ford’s next major bet in the electric vehicle sector. Following the discontinuation of the F-150 Lightning, which failed to meet its sales targets, Ford is aiming to reset its EV strategy with this new model. The previous model, despite high initial reservations, only managed to sell 33,510 units at its peak and was eventually phased out in 2025.

To revitalize its EV offerings, Ford has mobilized a team of around 350 experts in California, led by Clarke, to develop a new generation of electric vehicles. This effort focuses on creating a universal EV platform that enhances manufacturing efficiency and reduces component complexity, allowing for the production of up to eight different vehicles using the same battery technology.

A Tricky EV Market with New Contenders

Ford’s push for affordable electric vehicles comes as new competitors emerge in the market. Slate, a startup supported by Jeff Bezos, is launching its $24,950 electric pickup this year, while Fiat has introduced the sub-$15,000 Topolino to the U.S. market. Additionally, Chinese automakers like BYD have become significant players globally, challenging established companies with their advanced and cost-effective EVs.

In response to these challenges, Ford’s CEO, Jim Farley, has acknowledged the competitive pressure from both new and existing players in the automotive space. The launch of Ford’s Universal EV Platform in 2025 aims to address these competitive threats and strengthen the company’s position in the evolving market.
