Genesis, a renowned name in the luxury car market, is now venturing into the world of high-performance vehicles. Having previously established its reputation with award-winning models, the Korean automaker is introducing its performance subbrand, Magma, which debuted at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. American consumers will soon experience this new direction through the all-electric 2027 Genesis GV60 Magma, marking the beginning of a new era for Genesis.

The Genesis GV60 Magma represents more than a new vehicle; it signifies Genesis’ ambitious entry into the competitive luxury performance SUV market, long dominated by German brands like Mercedes-AMG, BMW M, and Audi S. As the first Magma model to hit the U.S. market, it is set to pave the way for more performance-oriented models across the Genesis lineup in the future.

On the Road

Genesis didn’t have to start from scratch with the GV60 Magma. The standard GV60 already offers a strong foundation with its impressive range, smooth ride, and quick charging capabilities. The Magma enhances these attributes with a focus on performance, featuring dual electric motors that generate approximately 601 horsepower, which can be temporarily boosted to 640 hp with a steering wheel button.

This all-electric SUV is not just a powerhouse; it’s a design marvel. It is 3.6 inches longer, 2.0 inches wider, and 1.0 inch lower than its predecessor, giving it a sleek and athletic stance. While South Korea’s speed limits limited the chance to fully test its capabilities, the GV60 Magma still delivers an exhilarating drive. It can mimic gear shifts and engine sounds, offering a more engaging experience than typical EVs.

The virtual tachometer, the simulated engine sounds, and the instant torque combine to create a driving experience that is both convincing and fun. Despite its futuristic tech, the GV60 Magma’s engine note remains authentic, enhancing the overall feel of the vehicle.

Performance was further tested on South Korea’s winding roads, particularly the challenging Maltijae Pass. The GV60 Magma, equipped with Pirelli P Zero tires on 21-inch wheels, demonstrated impressive grip and braking performance, even on sharp turns and steep climbs.

Two unique driving modes, GT and Sprint, allow for customization of the driving experience. GT mode offers a balance of performance and comfort, while Sprint mode unleashes the full potential of the GV60 Magma, with enhanced suspension, steering, and motor response.

Whether cruising on highways or tackling mountain roads, the GV60 Magma maintains a refined and comfortable ride. The cabin remains quiet, with minimal tire noise, making it a pleasant environment for passengers. The suspension strikes a balance between comfort and handling, making the GV60 Magma suitable for both daily commutes and spirited drives.
