Innovative Biomass Power Facility in Louisiana to Integrate Advanced Automation for Carbon Capture
- Emerson chosen to implement automation in cutting-edge carbon capture project by Strategic Biofuels
- Louisiana initiative aims to transform forestry waste into sustainable, carbon-neutral energy
- Emerson leverages its comprehensive industrial automation expertise in clean energy and carbon capture solutions
ST. LOUIS, April 2, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Renowned for its leadership in automation, Emerson (NYSE: EMR) has been selected to provide automation solutions for Strategic Biofuels’ ambitious $2-billion Louisiana Green Fuels (LGF) power facility in Caldwell Parish. This wood-fired power plant, integrated with commercial-scale carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), aims to deliver carbon-neutral electricity to the local grid.
The LGF facility, upon reaching full capacity, intends to process 1.3 million tons of forestry residuals annually—material that would otherwise decompose or be incinerated—into renewable baseload power. Concurrently, it plans to capture and securely store 1.1 million metric tons of CO₂ each year in subterranean geological formations. This initiative will facilitate the generation of 100 megawatts of clean, dispatchable electricity, positioning Louisiana as a leader in carbon-neutral energy solutions.
“This project represents a significant milestone in Caldwell Parish and for energy independence to support Louisiana’s future,” said Paul Schubert, Ph.D., Strategic Biofuels’ chief executive officer. “Emerson is the industry leader in process automation and their extensive experience and expertise in biomass power plants and carbon capture makes them the right partner for our project. We know they will be crucial to this project being completed on schedule.”
To enhance the integrated operations of the plant, Emerson will implement its DeltaV™ Automation Platform, along with a comprehensive range of advanced automation, measurement, and reliability technologies. Emerson’s offerings include Rosemount™ smart sensing, control valves, isolation valves, pressure protection devices, Micro Motion™ and Flexim™ flow and gas analysis solutions, and AspenTech® data management software—aimed at providing the high-fidelity visibility and dynamic optimization tools required for this pioneering carbon-neutral power system.
“Strategic Biofuels is charting a new course for clean, resilient energy by turning waste biomass into reliable power while permanently removing carbon from the atmosphere,” said Mike Train, Emerson’s chief sustainability officer. “Emerson is proud to support this breakthrough project with the automation technologies and CCS expertise needed to ensure safe, efficient and continuous operation of next-generation clean energy facilities.”
Leveraging its extensive automation capabilities and decades of experience in supporting energy transition infrastructure, Emerson is set to assist LGF in maximizing efficiency, mitigating operational risks, and achieving its goal of creating a replicable, commercially viable pathway to carbon-neutral energy.
