Upcoming Foundation Installation at Hornsea 3

The installation of wind turbine foundations at Ørsted’s Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm in the UK starts in April.
First Hornsea 3 Monopiles Arrive in UK from Spain

Wind turbine foundation installation at Ørsted’s Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm in the UK is set to begin in April. Cadeler’s vessels Wind Ally and Wind Orca, along with the service operation vessel (SOV) Esvagt Froude, will mobilize from Dutch and UK ports for the project.

Wind Ally will mobilize from Rotterdam, Netherlands, to install XXL monopiles, with operations beginning on 12 April. Wind Orca will handle secondary structure installations, starting from the Port of Tyne, England, on 19 April, as per a Notice to Mariners.

The SOV Esvagt Froude will support foundation commissioning from the Port of Hull, England, with work commencing on 24 April.

Seiche, the contractor, will deploy noise monitoring systems using the vessel BB Ocean during the installation.

The initial batch of six monopiles, out of 197 planned for Hornsea 3, recently arrived at the Steel River Quay in Teesside Freeport from Haizea Wind Group’s facility in Bilbao, Spain.

Ørsted signed contracts in 2022 for Hornsea 3 monopiles with SeAH Wind and Haizea Wind Group. The contract with SeAH was mutually terminated due to production challenges at its Teesside facility, leading Ørsted to reallocate SeAH’s scope to other suppliers.

In early March, Dajin Heavy Industry shipped the first Hornsea 3 monopiles from China to the UK aboard its heavy-cargo deck carrier, King One.

Hornsea 3 is Ørsted’s third gigawatt-scale project in the North Sea’s Hornsea zone. It will feature 197 Siemens Gamesa 14 MW turbines, located approximately 160 kilometers off the Yorkshire coast.

With a capacity of 2.9 GW, Hornsea 3 is described by Ørsted as the largest single offshore wind farm globally, expected to become operational in 2027.
