Southern Energy Renewables Invests $1.4 Billion in Louisiana for Green Fuel Production
In a significant boost to the U.S. energy sector, Southern Energy Renewables is channeling $1.4 billion into a state-of-the-art green methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facility in Killona, Louisiana. This development is set to leverage the region’s wood-waste biomass, aiming to produce some of the industry’s lowest lifecycle-carbon fuels.
The new facility is poised to generate 514 new job opportunities in the Southeast Region, with 120 being direct jobs offering salaries averaging $97,267—5% higher than the local average. The Louisiana Economic Development (LED) anticipates the creation of an additional 394 indirect positions.
LED Secretary Susan B. Bourgeois remarked, “Louisiana’s energy leadership is rooted in our ability to couple emerging technologies alongside the industries that have long powered our state.”
Strategically located near essential hydrogen supply and logistics infrastructure, this project is Southern Energy Renewables’ inaugural commercial-scale venture in Louisiana. The company is also eyeing a merger with DevvStream, known for carbon management and monetization, to further strengthen its foothold in clean energy.
Jay Patel, CEO of Southern Energy Renewables, emphasized the project’s potential to reduce global reliance on China for clean fuels. “With support from LED and other local partners, our roadmap is built to deliver fuels at an industrial scale with a clear cost advantage,” Patel stated.
The facility is expected to begin commercial operations in late 2029, with construction slated to start in late 2027. St. Charles Parish President Matthew Jewell highlighted the community’s strategic importance along the Mississippi River, welcoming the investment that will bolster the local economy and job market.
Michael Hecht, President and CEO of Greater New Orleans, Inc., noted, “This remarkable project builds on the state’s industrial strengths, skilled workforce, and global logistics assets to bring a first-of-its-kind sustainable jet fuel and methanol facility to St. Charles Parish.”
To secure this project, Louisiana offered Southern Energy Renewables a competitive incentives package, including workforce development solutions from LED FastStart and a $1 million performance-based grant for infrastructure improvements. The company plans to engage in the state’s Industrial Tax Exemption program as well.
