Global Temperatures on the Rise: Will 2026 Break Records?
As wildfires rage across North America and Europe and heat waves scorch cities worldwide, the Earth’s oceans have reached unprecedented temperatures. These alarming trends are exacerbated by a strengthening El Nino expected to intensify global warming and disrupt weather patterns.
Currently, 2026 ranks as the third-hottest year, trailing 2024 and 2025. However, due to the combined effects of human-induced climate change and a potentially record-breaking El Nino, scientists predict that 2026 might soon claim the title of hottest year on record. This scenario seems likely, especially with experts agreeing that 2027 is poised to surpass all previous records.
Potential for a Record-Breaking Year
Climate scientist Zeke Hausfather from Berkeley Earth estimates a 35% probability of 2026 exceeding 2024’s heat records, a figure that has been revised upward from 7% in March. James Hansen, a prominent figure in climate science, also anticipates 2026 surpassing 2024 by year’s end.
The world’s sea surface temperatures have matched those of 2024 since May, consistently setting records. With oceans covering over 70% of the Earth’s surface, scientists, including Hansen, note a lag between ocean heat and global temperature increases. Currently, 82% of the ocean surface is experiencing marine heat waves, according to Europe’s Copernicus climate service.
The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) previously predicted a 66% chance of 2026 ranking as the fourth hottest year. However, as NOAA finalizes its July analysis, these odds are expected to increase. Climate experts like Hausfather attribute this shift to the forecast of an exceptionally strong El Nino.
El Nino, a natural warming event in the equatorial Pacific, is anticipated to reach unprecedented levels, releasing accumulated ocean heat and further elevating global temperatures. Climate scientist Zachary Labe emphasizes that the continuous rise in ocean heat content is a direct indicator of human-caused climate change.
Human Influence on Current Heat Waves
Despite the anticipated impact of El Nino, climate scientists argue that this summer’s extreme weather is primarily driven by human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels. Labe notes that the dominant factor in the record warmth is climate change, with El Nino contributing only marginally.
Hansen adds that the reduction in industrial pollution, which previously masked some effects of greenhouse gases, is accelerating the warming process. Additionally, the climate system may be responding more intensely to greenhouse gases than previously expected.
Heat Waves and Global Impact
This year’s heat waves have severely affected regions unaccustomed to extreme temperatures, disrupting sleep and impacting health and productivity, according to Samantha Burgess from the Copernicus climate service. Europe, in particular, has experienced repeated and extensive heat waves.
Burgess highlights that similar heat waves have occurred globally, including in North America, South America, and India. The frequency and intensity of these events in Europe are especially noteworthy.
Princeton University climate scientist Michael Oppenheimer states, “These are vivid pictures of not just the future, which is what we used to say, but on the whole of what climate change is doing. There’s no question that climate change has increased the risk of wildfires. There’s no question that the climate change increased the probability of really hot, nasty, even unprecedented summers around the world.”
