The landscape of electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States is rapidly changing. With the EV tax credit set to expire in September 2025 and an inadequate charging infrastructure posing challenges, the market faces uncertainty. However, ZM Trucks, a company specializing in new-energy commercial vehicles, is forging ahead with optimism and innovation.
Recently, ZM Trucks inaugurated its new U.S. headquarters and assembly plant in Fontana, California, showcasing its commitment to the American market. “Despite policy uncertainty, we’re charging ahead,” stated Joost de Vries, the global CEO of ZM Trucks.
Strategic Fleet Integration
Operating as a subsidiary of Japan’s ZO Motors, ZM Trucks recognizes the U.S. as a key market. Situated just 49 miles from Los Angeles, their state-of-the-art facility spans 9.67 acres, featuring a 210,000-square-foot factory. The company is targeting businesses nationwide, assisting them in transitioning to electric vehicles.
De Vries and his team assess fleet requirements to deliver tailored proposals. In one case, a Brooklyn-based business operating five delivery trucks was advised it could cut weekly operating costs by 18% through electrification. ZM Trucks proposed a gradual transition plan to avoid business disruption. “We recommended they start with two trucks, allowing the drivers to learn how to drive an electric truck and streamline the new process,” de Vries explained.
Performance Over Diesel
ZM Trucks’ vehicles emphasize superior performance over traditional diesel trucks. Their tagline, “We beat diesel,” reflects their commitment to urban commercial operators, offering a lower total cost of ownership and advanced fleet management solutions. De Vries noted the company’s exclusive focus on EVs, which allows them to integrate top-tier components from Bosch and BYD, rather than producing their own.
The company equips its clients with seamless fleet management technology that enables real-time data monitoring. “All our trucks are a hundred percent online all the time,” de Vries told Clean Trucking. “Everything that’s visible in the truck is visible to the fleet owner. So we can be very predictive and preventive in our maintenance package.”
As the EV market evolves, ZM Trucks is focused on the long-term, planning beyond immediate hurdles. De Vries emphasizes a decade-long perspective, positioning the company to remain a leading force in the electric commercial vehicle sector.
