Volvo’s XC60 and XC90 2028 Refresh: Enhanced Range and Design

Volvo's refreshed plug-in hybrids feature double the electric range, new safety gear, and a sleek design update.

Volvo has unveiled significant updates to its SUV lineup, focusing notably on the plug-in hybrid models. These refreshed vehicles boast a doubled electric range, new design tweaks, and enhanced safety features. CleanTechnica was invited to preview these updates in London.

The enhancements cover over 60% of Volvo’s sales portfolio, primarily focusing on extending the electric range of their hybrids, a strategic move considering the political climate, especially in the US. This extended range aims to encourage drivers to adapt to charging at home, easing the transition from traditional combustion engines to electric vehicles.

Exciting Upgrades for the 2028 XC60

Volvo’s XC60 for 2028 stands out with its improved electric range, now reaching 124 miles (200 kilometers) per charge. This range increase comes courtesy of a new 41.2 kWh battery, strategically relocated to the vehicle’s floor for better space utilization and handling. This change supports a practical shift towards using the hybrid in full electric mode for daily commutes.

In the United States, the XC60 will be manufactured in Charleston, South Carolina, while the global market will be supplied from Volvo’s largest plant in Torslanda, Sweden. The vehicle’s exterior features a modernized look with updated headlight designs and a refined grille, enhancing its overall appeal.

Safety remains a cornerstone of Volvo’s design philosophy. The XC60 has been equipped with advanced features like automatic emergency steering and braking, collision avoidance technologies, and a door-opening alert system to prevent accidents with cyclists.

Subtle Changes for the 2028 XC90

The XC90’s design remains largely unchanged, but it benefits from the same battery enhancements as the XC60, providing a 102-mile electric range. The removal of the lidar from the windshield offers a sleeker appearance for the model year.

Volvo continues to roll out software updates to tackle initial issues and enhance vehicle functionality, integrating Google Gemini to improve in-car experience. This move towards AI integration raises questions about user interaction and the actual benefits of these technologies.
