Volvo’s Ambitious Expansion: 13 New Models by 2030

Volvo is undertaking a significant transformation, planning to introduce 13 completely new car models by 2030. This bold move signals a shift away from a previously electric-only strategy. Instead, the lineup will feature a mix of fully electric vehicles and third-generation hybrids, catering to varied consumer preferences across different regions.

UPDATE: Volvo has revealed more insights into its future plans, suggesting the development of both “new low & high body types,” which might include sedans and wagons. Moreover, larger models than the XC90 and EX90 are on the table, alongside a new concept car previewing a fresh design direction, set to debut in 2027 to celebrate Volvo’s centenary.

Volvo’s upcoming models are strategically designed for different markets, with seven models geared towards Western regions and six tailored for China. The automaker, part of the Geely group, aims to increase its market share significantly through this diverse offering.

Despite initial plans to go fully electric, Volvo acknowledges the reluctance among some customers to completely abandon combustion engines. As a result, the company is introducing hybrids alongside EVs, aiming to accommodate various consumer needs while doubling its market presence.

Regional Focus and Strategic Partnerships

In Western markets, the new models will be built on Volvo’s SPA2 and SPA3 platforms. Meanwhile, in China, Volvo will collaborate with its parent company, Geely, to expedite the development of next-generation vehicles through shared platforms. This approach is expected to reduce costs and offer products that align with local preferences, aiming for 30 percent commonality in parts, significantly higher than the current rate.

‘Our showrooms will look very different in 2030. This is our strongest product pipeline ever, tailored to regional needs, and emphasizes our ambition to be the leading premium car brand.’ – Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson

Innovative Sales Approaches and New Market Segments

Beyond the new product lineup, Volvo is revising its sales model to include transparent pricing and simplified offers. This strategy aims to improve customer experience with quicker delivery options and special versions.

The introduction of these new models will cater to both fully electric and hybrid customers, with long-range plug-in hybrids like the XC60 and XC90 poised to attract those hesitant to fully embrace electric vehicles. The first of these models is expected soon, heralding a transformative period for Volvo’s offerings.
