In a landscape where automotive brands often engage in bold proclamations, Volvo has introduced its latest offering, sparking conversations about the future of electric vehicles. The EX60, Volvo’s new midsize electric SUV, has been unveiled with claims of redefining the freedom to move. Independent critics have dubbed it “a new premium SUV with lots of usable tech.”

The EX60’s standout feature is its impressive range, reportedly comparable to the latest models from BMW and emerging Chinese brands like Nio and Zeekr. A top-tier version of the EX60 promises a remarkable range of 503 miles (810 km) on a single charge. This could potentially allow travel from Paris to Berlin or Chicago to Nashville without a recharge. Furthermore, using a 400-kW fast charger, the EX60 can gain over 200 miles (340 km) of range in just 10 minutes.

However, the extensive range is tied to a specific 117-kWh battery, which is offered at a premium cost, and most models will have a 385-mile (619-km) range instead. Recognizing the importance of battery life in electric vehicle sales, Volvo—under the ownership of China’s Geely—has ensured its battery packs come with a 10-year warranty. Additionally, Swedish customers will benefit from three years of free home charging, with potential expansion into other regions.

In the pursuit of efficiency, Volvo has not only focused on advanced batteries but also employed lighter materials and in-house developed motors. The vehicle’s battery is integrated into the car’s structure to maximize range. The EX60 is also the first model to utilize “mega casting,” a manufacturing technique that replaces multiple components with a single, precise casting, thereby reducing weight and enhancing efficiency.

The EX60 comes equipped with Breathe Battery Technologies’ algorithms that optimize battery charging efficiency across various conditions. Other innovative features include an interior radar system for detecting minor movements, preventing children or pets from being left inside the vehicle, and the integration of Google Gemini AI for natural interactions with the infotainment system.

Another notable advancement is Volvo’s “multi-adaptive belt.” This technology customizes seat belt tension based on the occupant’s characteristics and crash dynamics, improving safety by tailoring protection to individual needs. The 2027 EX60 is available for configuration in the UK, starting at around £57,000 (approximately US$77,800), with broader availability details yet to be announced.
