Pre-orders have commenced in China for Volkswagen’s new ID.UNYX 08 electric SUV, an innovative creation born from the brand’s collaboration with XPeng. This marks Volkswagen’s entry into the competitive EV sector with a starting price under $35,000.

Volkswagen’s China-Centric EV Initiative

In a determined move to reclaim its top position in the Chinese auto market, Volkswagen has rolled out the ID.UNYX 08. This launch follows Volkswagen’s loss of the top-selling car brand status to BYD in 2023, but the company has already bounced back, leading sales in early 2026.

Volkswagen’s strategy, encapsulated in the motto “In China, for China,” involves a significant increase in its electric vehicle offerings, planning to introduce a new model every fortnight throughout the year.

The ID.UNYX 08 is Volkswagen’s pioneering fully electric SUV, integrating advanced technologies from XPeng. The pre-order prices in China range from 239,900 to 299,900 yuan ($34,500 to $43,500), highlighting its competitive pricing.

CEO Oliver Blume commented on the significance of this launch, stating, “Three years ago, we launched our strong China strategy – It is now unleashing its full power. The ID.UNYX 08 is the next impressive proof of this.”

Built on an 800V architecture co-developed with XPeng, the ID.UNYX 08 offers ultra-fast charging, significantly reducing downtime with a 10% to 80% charge achievable in about 20 minutes.

The SUV is outfitted with XPeng’s newest Vision-Language-Action (VLA 2.0) ADAS driving technology, providing substantial computing capabilities with up to 1,500 TOPS, facilitating Navigate on Autopilot both on highways and urban settings.

Inside, the ID.UNYX 08 is equipped with dual 14.96″ screens for navigation and infotainment along with a 10.25″ driver display, and includes a built-in refrigerator, marking a new standard for Volkswagen’s interiors.

Available in single and dual-motor all-wheel-drive setups, the SUV’s powertrain options include a 230 kW (308 hp) rear motor and a combined 370 kW (496 hp) for the AWD version. Battery options from CATL include 82.4 kWh and 95 kWh packs, providing ranges of 630 km (391 miles) to 730 km (453 miles) under the CLTC cycle.

With dimensions of 5,000 mm in length, 1,954 mm in width, and 1,672 mm in height, the ID.UNYX 08 stands ready to compete against models like the Xiaomi YU7 and Li Auto i6.

Volkswagen anticipates the ID.UNYX 08 will be available by mid-2026, initiating a series of 20 tailored EVs for the Chinese market this year. The collaboration with XPeng is expected to yield another model by the end of the year, as Volkswagen aims for 50 new NEV models in China by 2030 to maintain its leading position as an international manufacturer.

Volkswagen’s rapid production timeline, with the first ID.UNYX 08 rolling out just 24 months after the XPeng partnership, exemplifies the “China Speed” Volkswagen proudly touts.

Despite leading early 2026 sales, Volkswagen faces fierce competition from domestic brands. BYD’s recent unveiling of its Blade Battery 2.0, promising over 1,000 km of range and 5-minute fast charging, underscores the intensifying market rivalry.

Whether Volkswagen can maintain its lead as a top-selling brand will depend on its ability to leverage local technologies and innovations.
