The Next Big Shift in Land Rover’s Electric Evolution
Land Rover’s journey into the electric vehicle (EV) space is taking a significant turn with the upcoming all-electric Range Rover Sport. Initially slated for a 2024 debut, this model has experienced delays as the company focuses on perfecting its design. According to Martin Limpert, Managing Director, Range Rover aims to ensure the vehicle is “right” before it hits the market.
What Sets the Sport Electric Apart?
The Range Rover Sport Electric (RRSE) shares its core platform and powertrain with the larger Range Rover, maintaining the brand’s performance standards. This model features dual electric motors producing 542bhp and a torque output of 627lb ft, similar to its full-size counterpart. The RRSE is expected to offer around 330 miles of range on a single charge, thanks to its 118.5kWh battery.
Rapid charging capabilities are anticipated, as the vehicle utilizes an 800-volt architecture supporting 350kW charging rates. This technology mirrors what is available in the larger Range Rover.
A Glimpse Into the Driving Experience
JLR allowed a brief test drive of a prototype at the Goodwood Motor Circuit, presenting opportunities to explore its handling and performance. The drive incorporated dynamic challenges reminiscent of past Range Rover Sport marketing stunts, like the ‘Dragon Challenge’ of 2018.
During the test, the RRSE demonstrated agility with its air suspension and four-wheel steering, maintaining stability through fast turns. The lower center of gravity, thanks to the battery placement, enhances its performance. The vehicle’s Dynamic mode offers aggressive throttle response, although specific acceleration figures are yet to be disclosed.
Regenerative braking in one-pedal mode and seamless transition to friction braking were also notable features, providing a smooth driving experience.
Off-Road Capabilities
The Range Rover Sport Electric retains impressive off-road prowess, handling steep climbs with ease in ‘Rock Crawl’ mode. The vehicle’s brain optimally manages traction, ensuring stability across various terrains. This EV version includes all the traditional off-road modes, adjusted for one-pedal driving.
Interior Insights
Inside, the RRSE retains the minimalist design of recent Range Rover models, with a 13.1-inch central touchscreen and a 13.7-inch digital display. The interior remains quiet and luxurious, though a full road test will provide a more comprehensive assessment.
Price and Availability
Pricing details are expected later this year, but the RRSE is anticipated to exceed the entry-level Sport’s starting price of just under £80,000. The combination of silent electric power and robust performance promises a compelling addition to Range Rover’s lineup.
