In a recent study, researchers from Climate Central have found that human-induced climate change may be responsible for at least 25% of emergency room visits related to heat illnesses in the United States. The study, published in the September issue of the journal Climatic Change, analyzed data from warmer seasons between 2018 and 2025, indicating a significant impact of climate change on public health.
Heat-related illnesses have been increasing nationwide, with a study from Yale School of Public Health noting that heat-related deaths rose by over 50% from 2000 to 2020. Kristina Dahl, vice president for science at Climate Central, emphasized the strain on the healthcare system, particularly emergency medicine, stating, “This data is giving us a baseline that we know we’d be building on if we continue warming our planet.”
Regional variations were observed in the impact of climate change on ER visits. In the Southern Plains, which includes states like Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, climate change was estimated to account for approximately 25% of the heat-related ER visits. The absolute rate of these visits was higher in the South due to human-induced climate change, with an estimated 57 out of every 100,000 ER visits in the Texas region attributed to climate-related heat illnesses. Overall, about 225 out of every 100,000 ER visits there were heat-related.
Climate Central’s study involved estimating what temperatures might have been like without the influence of human-caused climate change. By comparing these modeled temperatures with actual ER visit rates for heat-related illnesses, researchers assessed the contributions of climate change. Dahl noted that the methodology is grounded in two decades of environmental science, highlighting the established link between temperature and hospital visits for heat-related issues.
However, University of North Texas health professor Kai Zhang pointed out that the study’s methodology provides only a rough estimate of climate change’s impact on ER visits. Factors like humidity and weather variations within study regions also affect these estimates. Moreover, heat-related illnesses are sometimes recorded under different complaints, such as cardiovascular disease, leading to potential undercounts in official figures.
While it’s challenging to pinpoint specific deaths caused by human-made climate change, Zhang noted that the broader weather shifts we’re experiencing are likely to exacerbate not just heat-related illnesses but other health issues in the U.S. “As a result of changing climate, we will see more and more extreme weather events,” Zhang said. “Extreme heat, extreme cold, hurricanes, flooding.”
Dahl hopes the research can aid public health systems in adapting to the changing climate. “Because most heat-related illnesses and deaths are preventable, there’s a lot we can do with this information to help reduce the burden of hot summers,” she said.
