Charlotte, North Carolina, is set to become a significant hub for electric vehicle innovation with the arrival of Scout Motors’ global headquarters. This development not only highlights the city’s appeal but also promises to bring a substantial economic boost to the region.

Governor Josh Stein, alongside the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance, announced the decision to establish Scout Motors’ headquarters in Charlotte, a move expected to create approximately 1,200 jobs in the area. These roles will encompass various fields, including corporate leadership, research and development, and marketing, potentially adding nearly $5 billion to the state’s economy.

Governor Stein emphasized the collaborative effort that led to this decision, stating, “This announcement is the result of a strong collaboration by company executives, state and local elected officials from both parties, and state, local, and nonprofit economic development professionals.”

Scout Motors CEO Scott Keogh detailed the company’s employment needs, highlighting the demand for diverse talent in sales, marketing, software, AI, and engineering. Keogh expressed confidence in finding the necessary talent in Charlotte, which was selected for its livability, educational opportunities, favorable climate, and proximity to their manufacturing facility.

Governor Stein shared his enthusiasm for the city’s quality of life, noting, “The quality of life is remarkable here. We’re in mid-November, it’s 70 degrees outside. That helps when you’re selling a state.” Keogh, while accepting a handcrafted vase from North Carolina potter Ben Owen, reflected on the company’s journey from a small team with a vision to revitalize American manufacturing.

Who is Scout Motors?

The Scout vehicle brand has a storied history, originating in 1959 and producing vehicles until 1980. Originally based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the brand was revived by the Volkswagen Automotive Group in 2022 to focus on off-road electric vehicles.

Scout Motors is currently developing two models, the Traveler SUV and the Terra pickup truck, both projected to be available in late 2027. These vehicles are expected to achieve a driving range of about 350 miles per charge, with plans for extended-range models capable of up to 500 miles.

How much will a Scout vehicle cost?

While specific pricing details have yet to be finalized, Scout Motors has indicated that base models will be priced below $60,000.

Does Scout already have operations elsewhere?

In addition to the new headquarters in Charlotte, Scout Motors has announced plans to build vehicles at a facility in Blythewood, South Carolina, as revealed in October 2024. This expansion reflects the company’s commitment to revitalizing American manufacturing.
