Rivian Showcases R2 SUV at SXSW with Off-Road Course in Austin

Rivian showcased its R2 SUV at SXSW, building a 270-foot dirt track in Austin to highlight its off-road capabilities.
Rivian eyes Austin as major market ahead of R2 launch

In a move that blends cutting-edge technology with urban spectacle, Rivian Automotive Inc. transformed a section of downtown Austin into an off-road showcase to unveil its highly anticipated R2 electric SUV. This bold display is part of Rivian’s strategic push into the Texas market, spotlighting Austin as a critical hub in their expansion plans.

Rivian’s Austin Ambitions

Rivian’s new R2 SUV, a midsize electric vehicle, aims to capture the mass market and compete directly with industry giants like Tesla Inc. The company, headquartered in California, sees Austin as a “priority market,” according to Denise Cherry, Rivian’s vice president of marketing. Cherry highlights the city’s potential: “We anticipate Austin being a really large market for us, and we want as much coverage here in this market as possible, so we continue to explore coverage across the larger Austin metro.”

The unveiling at South by Southwest (SXSW), where Rivian was the headline sponsor, underscores the company’s commitment to expanding its customer base. Rivian even went as far as constructing a 270-foot dirt track on Congress Avenue using 2,500 tons of recycled asphalt to allow the public to experience the R2 firsthand.

Investment and Competition

Rivian’s growth strategy includes a significant investment in Texas, with plans to establish a $9.5 million service and sales center in Round Rock. This move positions Rivian to compete more directly with Tesla, which has a substantial presence in the state through its Gigafactory Texas in Travis County.

The R2 SUV is expected to be priced starting at $57,990 for a performance model, with more affordable versions anticipated to be around $48,490. This pricing positions Rivian’s R2 below its previous models but still above Tesla’s upcoming Cybercab, expected to start at approximately $30,000.

Autonomy and Innovation

Rivian’s expansion isn’t limited to traditional vehicles. The automaker has recently announced a partnership with Uber to supply 10,000 fully autonomous R2 SUVs by 2028, with plans to expand the service to 25 cities across the US, Canada, and Europe by 2031. Despite the ambitious goals, Rivian hasn’t disclosed whether Texas cities will be included in this rollout.

Rivian also enhances its vehicles with cutting-edge autonomous technology. The R2 will be equipped with lidar sensors and the AI-powered Rivian Assistant, capable of performing tasks like adjusting the temperature or rescheduling meetings. Greg Revelle, Rivian’s chief customer officer, emphasized the company’s focus on intelligence over mere electric capability: “What we have really pushed on this vehicle is intelligence; that’s the word I would use much more than I would electric. Electric is a component of it, but the whole package is really different from anything you’re going to find on the market today.”

Safety and Regulatory Challenges

While Rivian is advancing in autonomous technology, safety remains a priority. Revelle stated, “One of the reasons we’re investing in all this autonomy technology is because it takes the human out of the loop and will ultimately lead to a much safer environment.” However, the company is aware of the scrutiny from safety regulators who are closely monitoring driver-assistance and autonomous systems, especially after recent incidents involving other automakers.

As Rivian moves forward, the company remains committed to safety and innovation, aiming to redefine the electric vehicle market with its R2 SUV and its autonomous technology initiatives.
