Rivian R2: A Worthy Tesla Competitor in the Modern EV Landscape

If you seek a modern EV in the US, your choice is between Tesla and Rivian. The Rivian R2 is fun to drive and...
Rivian's R2 is the most exciting alternative to Tesla, but probably not for the reasons you think

As the electric vehicle market evolves, Tesla and Rivian have emerged as prominent players, especially in the U.S. market. While there are some fine EVs, these two brands stand out for their innovation and forward-thinking designs at accessible price points.

Having driven electric vehicles since 2018, I recently spent a week with the Rivian R2 and found it to be a compelling competitor to Tesla. Rivian’s approach to crafting future-ready vehicles is noteworthy, with the R2 offering much more than just an exciting driving experience.

The Future of Cars: Rivian Meets Tesla

The Rivian R2’s standout feature is its app and continuous connectivity, reminiscent of Tesla’s Model 3, which set a precedent for modern electric vehicles back in 2018. An electric vehicle, being essentially a large battery, needs to be perpetually connected, and Rivian embraces this concept.

Features like Tesla’s Summon, allowing remote control of the vehicle, set the bar high. Rivian’s R2 app, while not yet at Tesla’s level, manages directions and charging from a mobile device, enhancing convenience. The Gear Guard Live Cam feature allows remote monitoring of the vehicle, showcasing Rivian’s commitment to innovation.

Inside the R2, the Haptic Halo Wheels on the steering wheel offer intuitive control over various functions without taking your hands off the wheel. This integration of technology enhances the driving experience by allowing for customization of the driver display, including traffic and map views.

Rivian also excels with over-the-air software updates, adding new features like the Pet Mode and holiday-themed animations, keeping the vehicle’s software current and engaging.

Driving Dynamics: Rivian R2 vs. Tesla Model Y

Although similar in size to the Tesla Model Y, the Rivian R2 offers a different driving experience, thanks to its taller stance. The R2 is observed to be smoother and more comfortable compared to the Model Y and Model 3. The R2 Launch Edition Performance model offers various driving modes, from all-purpose to off-road, catering to different driving conditions.

While Rivian’s driving modes aren’t directly comparable to Tesla’s, they offer distinct differences in acceleration and handling. The R2 allows for adjustments in regenerative braking, stability, and suspension firmness, providing a tailored driving experience, although finding the perfect settings may take time.

Currently, Rivian’s R2 does not offer self-driving capabilities comparable to Tesla’s, but Autonomy+ is expected to bring incremental improvements. For those reliant on Tesla’s self-driving tech, this could be a consideration before switching to Rivian.

Innovative Interior Design

The interior of the R2 is thoughtfully designed with practical features like dual gloveboxes and retractable cup holders, maximizing space usage. The vehicle provides ample room, especially in the back seat, giving it an edge over the Model Y in terms of spaciousness.

Despite its clever design, the R2 does not compete with luxury brands like BMW or Lucid in terms of materials and screen quality, focusing instead on practicality and functionality.

Charging Capabilities

Although the R2 doesn’t utilize an 800-volt architecture, it offers competitive charging speeds, reaching 10% to 80% charge in under 30 minutes under optimal conditions. With a peak charging rate over 200kW, the R2 holds its own against competitors like the Model Y.

A significant advantage is the R2’s NACS charging port, compatible with Tesla’s Supercharger network, reducing charging anxiety. However, the manual charge port door could use improvement, feeling less robust compared to other components.

Considerations for Potential Buyers

After testing the Rivian R2, it’s evident that Rivian is positioned to challenge Tesla effectively, appealing to those seeking a modern, capable electric SUV. The R2 Launch Edition, priced at $57,990, offers a powerful package, but broader options are anticipated by 2027, likely enhancing its appeal to a wider audience.
