Revolutionizing Clean Energy: Harnessing Wasted Mechanical Energy from Roads
Imagine a world where the energy lost through vehicle motion on roads is transformed into clean, reliable electricity. This concept is becoming a reality with the development of the Road Energy Production System (REPS), which aims to convert mechanical energy from traffic into sustainable power without disrupting traffic flow. By targeting high-traffic areas such as ports, logistics hubs, and city intersections, REPS seeks to reduce energy costs and enhance sustainability.
REPS integrates seamlessly into existing road infrastructure, capturing energy from vehicles as they decelerate, brake, or navigate slopes. According to Alfons Huber, Founder and CEO of REPS, “Roads are everywhere. Traffic is everywhere. What was previously wasted energy can now be transformed into clean electricity through REPS.”
This innovation is touted to be 254 times more efficient than current alternatives, operating independently of weather conditions and time of day, thus overcoming limitations faced by other renewable sources like solar and wind. By focusing on energy that is already being wasted, REPS estimates that traffic energy alone could potentially meet around 5% of global electricity demand.
Energy harvesting, a field focused on converting lost mechanical impulses into usable electricity, has historically struggled with efficiency and durability. REPS claims to have overcome these challenges by redesigning the energy converter, which can endure heavy traffic for over 20 years with a quick return on investment.
The system’s first commercial implementation at the Port of Hamburg in November 2025 has proven successful, with over 115,000 trucks generating upwards of 6,700 kWh of electricity. This success has garnered international interest, with over 90 parties from various regions expressing a desire to implement the technology in ports, logistics hubs, and urban areas.
REPS projects that installing approximately 230 systems across public roads in Hamburg could generate about 10 GWh of electricity annually, powering 2,800 households and offsetting nearly 9.81% of port-related CO₂ emissions. In a larger setting, such as a city the size of Dubai, deploying 64,000 systems could recover about 3.2 TWh annually, equivalent to 10.8% of the city’s current energy consumption.
“The installation at our facility demonstrates the potential of REPS: where vehicles have to brake anyway, clean energy is recovered and can be used directly where we need it,” said Justin Karnbach, CEO of Hamburger Container Service GmbH. The system’s potential extends beyond roads, as REPS envisions a broader energy-harvesting platform that turns high-traffic infrastructure into decentralized power sources, making previously wasted energy economically viable.
