Nio’s Firefly Debuts in Belgium, Offers Price Cuts Across Europe

Nio's Firefly debuts in Belgium, with price cuts across Europe. Opening orders in more markets despite weak demand.
Nio's Brand Firefly Delivers First Vehicle in Belgium

Nio, the electric vehicle manufacturer, has made a significant stride in Belgium by delivering the first unit of its Firefly sub-brand, an urban electric hatchback, just two months after sales commenced in September. This marks a key moment for Nio as it expands its footprint in Europe.

Firefly’s Ambitious Growth Targets

Worldwide, Firefly has already completed 30,000 deliveries and aims to reach 100,000 by 2026, according to the sub-brand’s chief, as reported by EV in Shenzhen, China. The launch in Belgium coincides with the brand’s strategic decision to implement price cuts in Europe, responding to subdued demand in the region. The reductions reach up to 17.9% in the earliest European markets (source).

Initial Success in Belgium

The first Belgian customer, who eagerly ordered the vehicle as soon as sales opened, expressed excitement on LinkedIn as “the first customer of Nio Benelux to order the super new Nio Firefly.” In October, official figures from FEBIAC, the automotive association for Belgium and Luxembourg, showed that Nio registered 25 vehicles in Belgium. Updated numbers for November are expected soon.

As per the distributor’s website, 21 Firefly units are currently available, priced between €30,340 and €31,035. Additionally, the Nio brand offers 13 vehicles, including the EL6 SUV and ET5 Touring station wagon, with prices ranging from €70,990 to €79,250.

Competitive Pricing and Features

The Firefly hatchback, designed for urban environments, provides a range of 330 kilometers in its First Edition and 320 kilometers in the Comfort version. It competes directly with rivals like the Renault 5 and BYD Dolphin. Belgian pricing starts at €29,990.

Price Reductions in Norway and the Netherlands

Firefly has introduced substantial price cuts in Europe to boost sales. In the Netherlands, a Black Friday offer provided a €5,000 discount, reducing the price from €29,900 to €24,900, available from November 24 to December 7 for all in-stock First Edition models. Similarly, in Norway, the brand launched a “Pre-Christmas Offer” with a 17.9% reduction, valid until December 14, also limited to inventory.

Hedin Automotive’s Partnership

Nio expanded into Belgium and Luxembourg in June, appointing Hedin Automotive as the exclusive distributor. Hedin Automotive, which oversees 15 brands, manages vehicle sales, aftermarket services, and spare parts. Luxembourg is anticipated to open orders next year. The Belgian market media launch occurred in August in Brussels, following Nio’s appearance at the Link2fleet ZE Experience event in June (source).

Current European Presence

In Belgium and Luxembourg, Nio offers four models: the EL6 SUV, EL8 flagship SUV, ET5 sedan, and ET5 Touring. The larger EL7 and ET7 models are yet to enter these new markets. Nio’s European journey began in Norway in September 2021, followed by launches in Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden in 2022.

Currently, Nio operates 60 battery swap stations across five European countries, having closed its only Danish station earlier this month. Interestingly, Nio established its first infrastructure in Belgium before the vehicles were on sale, marking a first for the company. The Firefly will be compatible with Nio’s fifth-generation stations, with pilot programs commencing in China in December and mass production slated for early 2026. The timeline for European availability remains uncertain.
