Chinese EV maker Nio has quietly entered the Armenian market with N-Motors as its dealer, opening a showroom in Yerevan.

Amidst a rapidly expanding global footprint, Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio has discreetly stepped into the Armenian market. Although there has been no formal announcement, a launch event took place earlier this month, marking Nio’s presence in Armenia.

Nio’s entry into Armenia is facilitated by N-Motors, which serves as the official representative for both Nio and its sub-brand Onvo. N-Motors has been actively promoting this development on its social media platforms. “Global premium electric vehicle brands Nio and Onvo have officially entered the Armenian market, marking a new chapter in the evolution of the industry,” stated N-Motors on LinkedIn.

The first showroom in Armenia has been inaugurated in Yerevan, the nation’s capital, at Grigor Lusavorich 7. N-Motors describes it as a “next-generation showroom” that sets “a new benchmark for future mobility.”

Market Announcement

Speaking exclusively with EV in October, an insider verified Nio’s Armenian plans, confirming that operations had commenced. This was further corroborated by a spokesperson as reported by Chinese media outlet CnEVPost.

N-Motors has been granted authorization to retail Nio and Onvo vehicles for a specified duration and will independently manage after-sales services. Nio’s co-founder and president, Qin Lihong, emphasized the importance of maintaining flexible operations overseas, which is reflected in the requirement for dealers to meet quarterly order volume targets.

The dealer agreements differ from full distributor partnerships, as they are shorter in duration and lack brand authorization, meaning N-Motors cannot establish Nio Houses.

Interestingly, Nio has yet to officially announce its presence in Armenia, unlike its approach in neighboring Azerbaijan, where it formally announced its entry last year.

N-Motors

Arsen Zakharya, a business developer with previous experience as general manager for Geely and Zeekr in Armenia, spearheaded Nio’s market entry. He co-founded N-Motors to represent Nio and launched Farizon Armenia to introduce the brand locally.

N-Motors’ social media accounts were set up in August, though the website remains under construction. The showroom’s opening was initially projected for December but was delayed until March.

Lineup

The Armenian lineup from Nio’s dealer includes SUVs such as the entry-level EL6 (ES6 in China) and the larger EL8 (ES8 in China), along with Onvo’s L60 and L90 models. Despite N-Motors’ claim of being the exclusive dealer for Nio’s sub-brands, the more affordable Firefly has not yet been introduced.

Armenia is one of the pioneering markets to receive Nio’s Onvo sub-brand, as opposed to Firefly, which has been prioritized for global expansion. The Onvo vehicles began shipping late last year, with the first batch spotted in Uzbekistan.

Global Expansion

Nio has shifted from a direct-sales model in its first five overseas markets to partnering with local distributors, thereby reducing fixed costs and enhancing vehicle demand through established networks. This strategy expanded Nio’s reach in Europe to include Belgium, Austria, Portugal, Greece, and Hungary.

Future plans involve entering the Czech Republic, Romania, Luxembourg, and Poland, as suggested by the appearance of Poland’s profile in the International Nio App. This strategic pivot is part of a larger vision by Nio’s leadership, including co-founder Qin Lihong, for substantial overseas expansion within two to three years.

In Asia, Nio has formally launched in Singapore, Macau, and Thailand, with the introduction of the Firefly sub-brand. This continued global expansion underscores Nio’s commitment to increasing its international presence and adapting its market strategies.
