New EV Charging Hub Boosts Convenience and Tourism in Katonah
In the heart of downtown Katonah, New York, a new fast-charging station for electric vehicles (EVs) is now operational, providing a crucial resource for drivers traveling through northeastern Westchester County. Situated less than a mile from Interstate 684, this station is part of the New York Power Authority’s (NYPA) EVolve NY network, a state-backed initiative aimed at expanding fast-charging options and encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles to lower transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions.
“Communities, like Katonah, that promote cleaner transportation options serve local residents, attract eco-conscious visitors, and showcase a commitment to sustainability and innovation,” stated Justin E. Driscoll, Power Authority president and CEO. He emphasized the collaboration between the Power Authority and the Town of Bedford in facilitating this convenient access for travelers in the Hudson Valley region.
Located just off Exit 6 on I-684, the Katonah EVolve NY station boasts six fast-charging units, making it one of the largest in the Hudson Valley. This installation complements other stations in the area, including a similar six-unit site at the North County Shopping Center in Goldens Bridge and soon-to-open facilities in downtown White Plains. The broader network now includes 232 chargers spread across 56 locations statewide.
Katonah, one of three hamlets in the Town of Bedford, not only offers convenient EV charging but also a charming setting for travelers. It’s an accessible stop for those heading upstate, towards New England, or south to New York City. “As a proud New York State Climate Smart Community with a strong dedication to economic vitality, Bedford is excited to welcome new fast chargers in Katonah,” said Bedford Town Supervisor Ellen Calves. She highlighted the dual benefits of environmental responsibility and increased local business opportunities due to higher foot traffic.
While their vehicles charge, visitors can explore Katonah’s quaint streets, featuring local boutiques, art galleries, and eateries. The area is rich in history, with Victorian gingerbread houses and scenic parks. A self-guided historic walking tour is available at this link. Events like the Fire Department Parade, Art Crawl, and Sidewalk Sale also provide engaging activities for visitors.
This charging hub is part of New York’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program and marks the 11th location under the EVolve NY initiative. The site at 252 Katonah Ave., adjacent to the Katonah Shopping Center, is equipped with six fast chargers capable of delivering up to 350 kilowatts via CCS connectors, ensuring a speedy charge in approximately 20 minutes. This strategic location allows easy access to nearby amenities, making it a convenient stop for both locals and travelers.
