Navantia UK has secured funding to expand its offshore wind manufacturing capabilities at the Arnish Yard in Stornoway, following Highlands and Islands Enterprise’s (HIE) approval of GBP 6 million (nearly EUR 7 million) for two offshore wind projects in the region.
The company will receive GBP 2.05 million (around EUR 2.37 million) towards a GBP 5 million (EUR 5.8 million) project aimed at enhancing capacity and productivity at the facility.
The investment will fund upgraded plant and equipment installations, allowing the yard to manage larger offshore wind components efficiently while lowering energy use. The expansion is set to increase the Arnish yard workforce from 150 to 250 over the next decade, with over 75 new roles directly resulting from the funding.
Last year, Navantia UK acquired British shipbuilder Harland & Wolff, extending its operations across four sites: Belfast in Northern Ireland, Appledore in South West England, Methil, and Arnish in Scotland.
Alongside Navantia’s project, HIE has allocated GBP 3.959 million (around EUR 4.6 million) for the next phase of the Ardersier Energy Transition Facility in the Inner Moray Firth. Developed by Haventus through its subsidiary Ardersier Port (Scotland) Limited, the site aims to become a hub for offshore wind component deployment, servicing, manufacturing, and integration, providing infrastructure for both fixed and floating wind projects. Learn more about the Ardersier Energy Transition Facility.
The first phase of development is complete, and the facility is ready for operational activity.
Funding will support front-end engineering, design work, and initial civil works related to quay wall development, as part of ongoing expansion plans after the first phase completion.
HIE’s funding aligns with the Scottish Government’s broader initiative to invest up to GBP 500 million over five years to strengthen the offshore wind supply chain. Read about the Scottish Government’s investment plans.
