Jaguar has made a dramatic entrance into the electric vehicle market with the reveal of its Type 01 EV. The vehicle, boasting 1,016 horsepower, marks the brand’s daring venture into a new design era, drawing both admiration and skepticism.

In late 2024, Jaguar stirred the automotive world by introducing a radical concept car, the Type 00, along with a rebranding effort that broke away from its traditional style. This rebranding, encapsulated by the phrase “copy nothing,” was met with mixed reactions. Despite the controversy, the company has now unveiled the Type 01 EV, a production model for the 2028 year that mirrors the bold concept, albeit with some refinements.

The car is a powerhouse, equipped with three motors that deliver a combined 1,016 horsepower. This setup allows the 6,000-pound vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds. The Type 01 EV is powered by an 850-volt, 120kWh battery, offering an impressive 400 miles of EPA-estimated range. Rapid charging capabilities enable the battery to go from 10% to 80% in 22 minutes on a 350kW DC charger.

Inside, the vehicle features a minimalist design with a central 7-inch interface resembling a smartphone and limited physical controls. It includes luxury elements such as massage seats, air purification, and customizable fragrances. Despite these features, the Type 01’s starting price of 130,000 British pounds ($172,000) positions it as a relatively accessible option within the luxury EV market.

Jaguar’s rebranding strategy has been polarizing, with the design receiving extreme ratings from survey respondents. The company’s managing director, however, embraces this divisiveness, stating, “great design should have the confidence to polarize… we’re not interested in 6s, 7s, and 8s.”

Orders for the Type 01 EV will open in early 2027, with deliveries expected later that year. As Jaguar continues to redefine its identity, the automotive world watches closely to see how consumers will respond to this bold new direction.
