Governor Hochul Recognized on TIME100 Climate List for Pioneering Environmental Initiatives

In a significant acknowledgment of environmental leadership, Governor Kathy Hochul has been included in the 2025 TIME100 Climate list, which highlights the top 100 global leaders who are making impactful strides in climate action. The comprehensive list can be viewed on TIME’s website.

Governor Hochul expressed her pride in New York’s recognition on this global platform, stating, “I’m proud that New York’s work to build a cleaner, more resilient future is being recognized on a global stage by such an esteemed publication as Time Magazine.” She emphasized New York’s commitment to innovation, community protection, and sustainability.

Efforts Towards Climate Resilience

As a former Co-Chair and current Executive Committee member of the US Climate Alliance, Governor Hochul has been instrumental in advocating for climate science, countering federal resistance, and achieving notable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. New York has played a pivotal role in the Alliance’s achievement of reducing emissions by 24 percent compared to 2005 levels.

The launch of the New York State Adaptation and Resilience Plan marks a comprehensive effort to bolster community readiness for climate change. This initiative integrates various state agency efforts to enhance climate readiness through shoreline restoration and infrastructure upgrades, supported by the $4.2 billion Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act.

Further initiatives like the Green Resiliency Grant program and the Resilient Economic Development Initiative (REDI) demonstrate the state’s dedication to supporting flood-prone areas and advancing shoreline protection, with significant investments and federal collaborations.

Advancing a Sustainable Economy

Governor Hochul’s leadership has propelled New York towards a greener economy, highlighted by the introduction of the first-in-the-nation Congestion Pricing Program in New York City and the $1 billion Sustainable Future Program. These initiatives have improved air quality, reduced traffic, and secured vital funds for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Significant investments include allocations for energy-efficient upgrades in buildings, renewable energy projects, expansion of thermal energy networks, and the promotion of electric vehicles and clean energy jobs, positioning New York as a leader in clean energy employment.

Strategic Energy Initiatives

Despite challenges, New York remains committed to a diverse energy future under Governor Hochul’s guidance. The state is pursuing innovative energy projects, including the first utility-scale offshore wind farm, South Fork Wind, and exceeding solar energy goals. Major infrastructure projects and legislation like the RAPID Act are streamlining renewable energy development processes.

Efforts to enhance energy reliability and economic efficiency are evident in numerous transmission line upgrades, the construction of the Champlain Hudson Power Express Transmission line, and modernizing the state’s power grid.

Natural Resource Protection and Community Strengthening

New York’s commitment to clean water initiatives has resulted in over $3.8 billion in grants and financing, with a continuous $500 million annual commitment to water projects. Additional investments focus on climate-resilient farming, reforestation, and flood risk mitigation, ensuring equity through the Environmental Bond Act’s focus on disadvantaged communities.
