Global Maritime to Decommission TetraSpar Floater Offshore Norway

The consortium of TEPCO Renewable Power, RWE, and Stiesdal Offshore has selected Global Maritime to oversee the decommissioning of the TetraSpar Demonstrator project in Norway.

The TetraSpar Demonstrator has operated at the Marine Energy Test Centre (METCentre) offshore Karmøy since 2021. It features Stiesdal Offshore’s TetraSub floating foundation with a 3.6 MW Siemens Gamesa wind turbine.

Aiming to finalize the project, the decommissioning will offer insights into the submerged structure’s condition after nearly five years, aiding the TetraSub foundation’s verification.

Global Maritime will manage both offshore and onshore decommissioning under the consortium’s agreement, including project management, engineering, procurement, and operational execution.

The offshore decommissioning begins with disconnecting and retrieving subsea components like the inter-array cable (IAC) and station keeping system (SKS). Materials will be recovered and recycled appropriately.

TetraSpar Demonstrator

The TetraSpar structure will then be towed to a deepwater location for temporary mooring. Further offshore work includes keel handling and deballasting before the structure is docked at the harbor.

Onshore, the focus will be on dismantling and recycling major components. The wind turbine will be disassembled, with the nacelle and rotor sent to OEM facilities, and tower sections recycled. The keel and floater will also be dismantled, with marine growth removed and hazardous materials segregated, allowing for material recycling.

Global Maritime will work with subcontractor Semco Maritime at its Hanøytangen yard, leveraging expertise in material handling, waste management, and recycling.
