Citroën to Launch Electric 2CV in 2028 at Affordable €15K Price

Citroën unveils an electric concept of the iconic 2CV, targeting a 2028 release for €15,000, blending nostalgia with modern tech.
The legendary Citroen 2CV is back as a €15k electric concept for 2028

The iconic Citroën 2CV, fondly remembered as the “Deux Chevaux” or “two horses,” is poised for a comeback, this time as a modern electric vehicle. Set to hit the roads in 2028, the revamped classic aims to capture the hearts of a new generation with an estimated price tag of just €15,000.

Originally introduced in the mid-20th century, the Citroën 2CV quickly became a beloved symbol of affordable and practical transportation across Europe. Its unique aesthetic, characterized by a rounded cabin, circular headlights, and pop-up windows, made it instantly recognizable. Despite its modest power, the car’s sales soared, reaching millions of units during its production years.

Originally designed for functionality, the 2CV’s soft suspension was even touted to transport a basket of eggs across a field without breaking them. Production ceased in 1990, yet the 2CV’s charm endures, with vintage models still spotted around the globe, including some converted to electric power by enthusiasts.

Citroën’s fresh electric concept, which maintains the 2CV’s signature silhouette, was recently previewed before the Paris Motor Show. While it retains the original’s overall shape, updates include a more angular front hood, roll-down windows, and the absence of rear fender skirts, giving it a modern twist.

Citroën plans to offer this new electric 2CV with a giant fabric roof that rolls open, paying homage to the original’s design. Remarkably, the new model will be even shorter than its predecessor, and aims to be lightweight, targeting a weight of around 1,000 kg (2,205 lbs), lighter than many current cars, including the Mazda MX-5.

Technical specifications, like battery size and power output, remain under wraps. However, it’s expected to deliver more power than its gas-powered predecessor, which ranged from 9 to 29 horsepower. Positioned between the Ami and C3, the new 2CV will likely offer a balanced performance for urban commuting.

The new model’s design, while updated, continues to evoke nostalgia through elements like the egg-friendly door pockets, reminiscent of the original’s rural utility focus. The concept interior, though minimal, prioritizes space for passengers with its sparse layout, featuring only essential tech such as a small display and removable radio module.

While the 2CV concept doesn’t have pop-out windows, it does have a pop-up vent to allow air into the cabin

Citroën’s revival of the 2CV aims to balance affordability with a nod to its heritage, potentially making it a hit among those seeking a practical, yet charming, urban vehicle. As the development progresses, the production model is expected to maintain the essence of what made the original 2CV a staple in automotive history.
